I've read and re-read leisureguy's book and must say it is something I can keep going back to and learning from over and over.
as suggested in the book, something I've tried lately is making my own ASB.
basically I've made a 50/50 mix of witch hazel and aloe vera gel which I keep in a small bottle in my 'shaving' cabinet. I purchased a number of different essential oils that I add to my mix.
after shaving I apply a small amount of the mix to my palm (about half an almond) and then sprinkle a few drops of oil on top. I mix it with my finger and then rub it on my face. nice!!!
the oils I have purchased so far are: eucalyptus, menthol, orange, lime, vanilla.
I can report that four drops of menthol create a face freeze/burn that is not unpleasant but certainly surprising and a little breathtaking! the orange smells fantastic as does the vanilla. ymmv.
if you already use aloe vera and witch hazel I suggest you give this a try as it is cheap and easy and you can experiment until you find a mix that you like then mix it straight into the bottle.
I'm not sure we need to start the BOHMASB (Brotherhood Of Home Made After Shave Balm) but I think this is a simple idea which should prove to be fairly popular. have at it!
