What's new

Holy ^%@! That was painful!

Picked up some Wilkinson Sword blades at Wally world the other night, Figured $1.76 for a pack of ten was a great deal. . .

. . . That great deal gave me the nastiest cut, no, GOUGE I have experienced yet. I was shaving my head as usual, great lather, great prep etc. Loaded one of these bad boys up into a '50's SuperSpeed and began my routine. When going ATG on the left side, right along where a person with hair would part it, the thing just dug in and kept right on going. Like taking a paring knife to an apple. Just SCOOPED out a nice chunk of flesh.

Crazy thing is I hardly even felt it, but boy did it sting for hours afterward. And yes, I still used my Witch hazel and aftershave.:tongue_sm I've never even had Feathers bite me like that. It's almost like the blade bent down, I can't see any other way for this to happen, especially with a SuperSpeed. I mean, I had to turn my styptic pencil on its side and roll it back and forth over the cut for like 2 solid minutes.:blushing:

Guess I'll be doing a PIF here in the next few days, the Feathers and Wilkinsons can go to a better home with someone whos got skin of steel. I'll stick to my Derby's and Sharks - I get BBS everytime with those and never a single nick.

Anyways, just venting.....

Yeah, the new Wilkinsons are only marginally sharper than the old Walmart Personnas and just as rough. I loaded one and did half a pass before I chucked it. It's just not worth shaving with a crappy blade.

Sorry to hear that you got a bad cut. I'm lucky that I've never had one.

I have had great shaves so far with the Wal-Mart Wilkinson blades. Reading the threads about them on the board, they seem to be pretty well respected. YMMV, and all.

I will volunteer to take those Feather blades off your hands when you decide to PIF them. :)
Also, I too have tried the new Wal Mart blades and got less than satisfactory results. I think I will give them another try, but see if corking the blades helps at all.

Sorry to hear about the gouge. Is it going to mess up your head shave schedule?

Oh definately. I havent been able to shave since it happened. It would just be a bloody mess if I tried.:thumbdown So just dealing with the stubble for a few days while it heals.

I hate dealing with stubble. It's so much easier to shave it everyday and it feels better.

I have had mixed results with the Wally Wilks. One blade will perform nicely but the very next will brutalize. This morning was one of the bad blades. Popped a new Wilk in a Super Adj and made it through half a pass before chucking the blade.

A check of the packaging on Wal-Mart's new DE blade of choice reveals no mention of platinum edge treatment, nor "Comfort Coated," a trade-marked term of ASR.

The version of "Wal-Mart Personnas" sold at Meijer stores around here sometimes has the term "Comfort Coated" on the packaging with a reference to ASR, sometimes not. The platinum edge treatment should make the Personnas last longer than the untreated Wilkinsons, which most people here regard as good for no more than 2-3 shaves.

That said, I have a stash of Sharks, Dorcos, Treets and NOS Gillettes and Wilkinsons that put me in no danger of running out of blades anytime soon. And, all are much more highly regarded on average than the Wal-Mart DE's.

All of these blades were ordered with no more mouse clicks and keystrokes than this post takes. So, why bother a trip to the store for marginal blades? My most recent trip to Wal-Mart was for toilet paper, oatmeal, canned salmon, and paint thinner. Blades? Fageddaboutit!

I've had OK results with the Wallyworld Wilkies. I haven't run across a terrible one yet, and for the first time I'm finding a real blade preference between razors with them...they don't get along with my Old Type open combs.

The seem to do better in my TTO razors, and while I could probably push them, they are going to be a three or four shaves and out blade for me.

I'd rate them as better than the ASR Personna brand that Wallmart dumped, but not good enough to supplant my favorites. It's nice to know I can get them locally, but I'm certainly not stocking up.

+1 on your comment. My mileage wasn't very good with these either.

Actually I've had great success with the wilky blades. Or blade rather. 12 shaves on one blade so far. I'll shave again Monday with it, want to see how far I can take it. I have nicked myself twice but that was my fault not the blade.
Maybe the next blade will be lousy.

+1 I had perfectly acceptable shaves with the Wilkinsons that I got a Walmart. They won't make me switch from my Derbys but I got three good shaves from one blade.

just out of curiosity to the OP, if "the blade" is responsible for your cut, why would you want to PIF such a dangerous, poorly made blade to someone, why not throw it in the garbage and spare someone else such a grievous injury from "the blade"?

Well, because not everybody gets the same results from the same equipment. Fact. Lots of people love feathers, I dont get along with them. You say you like Wilks, I obviously do not. Some people prefer Badger, I prefer Boar. Some like creams, I like soaps. Shall I go on?

"So" I "figure" "why not" give them "to" someone who "does" like "them"? :^S

Is there really something wrong with that?

Well, my head has finally healed enough to shave again. Stoked! Threw a Derby into a FatBoy, and had a wonderful, nick-free, BBS shave. :^D
