Got my Joris last night, and shaved with it before I went out. Aside from being stunningly beautiful, the thing is an absolute beast - by far the most aggressive razor I have ever used. I cut myself three times, and I thought that I was being careful. (Of course, I may have been spoiled my my Merkur bakelite.) 14 hours later my cheeks are still practically BBS. If I could just figure out how to get my neck without cutting myself...

Any suggestions? Stubblefield, I'm looking in your direction here...

Had to go look at them after you mentioned them.

Looked like very nice razors , seemed similar to a Merker 23 comb head .

As to what you can do for the shave I had the same thing and used some Shave Secret (WalMart 3.00$) helped a lot

The Joris (I believe) has the same head as the old-style Muhle R89 open comb. I own one of those razors, and it is indeed the most aggressive razor I've ever used. Far more than a Slant even. I found that the head cap supplied with the razor was too small. It allows the blade edge to "peek" slightly upwards, and thus it becomes a bloodthirsty beast. Replacing it with a Merkur head cap clamps the blade better, but the razor is still crazy aggressive.

It provides a BBS shave in 2 passes if you're careful, though.

I like the old R89 head. I run one on a bull mastif deluxe handle and it gives an excellent shave - but you need perfect concentration o avoid a bloody mess!

My first time through I nicked myself a few times. Probably had at least one nick per day over the first week.

I started by being very very careful, and slowing down my shave in the beginning. That helped A LOT. I also reduced the number of passes down to two wtg and only one atg on my neck. Neck for me was the area that required the most care. You might try cutting down on the # of passes for starters and not even go ATG for the first week or so. A little care goes a long way with this razor.

Personally, I still love the way the razor handles and could not even consider giving it up, as I'm addicted to the shave. And yes, it is even more aggressive than a Slant, but it is really easy to control.

What blade are you using? I found Astra Plats work very well (I could send you a box if you'd like to try them.)

And that I think is the key with this razor. Approach it as you would approach a straight.

I'm thinking about picking up an R89 and adding a Bull Mastiff handle to it. The head really benefits from a heavier handle.

I am using sharks right now, which are good, middle-of-the-road blades. I'll PM you my address - thanks a bunch!!
