What's new

Highest End *** (heh.) Who has em?

There are aftershave versions of some of my very favoritest scents - Blenheim Bouquet, English Fern, C&S #88, K10 to name a few.... With the exception of a bot of K10 AS I snagged in a trade, I'm unable to approach that $100 barrier for AFTER SHAVE. (aftershave translates in bythbook-ese to "use lots.") I can't even spend that much for vintage. (Well... not yet.)

Who among us will admit to using the Big $$ Aftershave Splash? (pronounced "bad-*ss")

Do you use it? Which one(s)?

Do you use it sparingly? Or with scentsational abandon?

(I personally am less inclined to go a little more sparingly with K10 than I am with AV.)

C'mon. Own up.

:blushing: I have and use Blenheim Bouquet ASB and C&S #88 splash, both are great. I love and do have a bad ASBAD even though I also make my own  but I am a sucker for good ASB :blushing:

do they... "heal?" or are they just wonderfully smelling weaker versions of the EdTs? (Yes, obviously, I'm working on rationalizing a B$AS purchase.)

The BB does a great job, #88 is not as good in healing but a great scent to complement #88 EdT, I would send you sample but unfortunately what I have left is less that 20 ml in each, sorry mate, I can send you a sample of my ASB which is as good if not better, PM your mailing address

I prefer less expensive *** with scents which fade quickly. Speick is inexpensive and I have yet to find another AS which makes my face feel better. I tend to spend more on the colognes, which unfortunately, are easily found over the $100 mark.

The thing is ... the more expensive an AS is does not mean it is more effective at repairing, soothing, and toning the skin. Most often, I have found, a guy is paying for the fragrance and brand. Especially designer stuff - which is mostly a little aloe and glycerin.

Penhaligons is one of the better in efficacy of fancy stuff.

Aqua di Parma for example, lovely fragrance, but hardly nada in skin love.

Now, SMN splashes and emulsion are pretty nice in skin properties and smell great.

YMMV applies here. Get what you enjoy wearing.

I used to own Pen's EF AS, and I liked it, but I tend to gravitate towards splashes that have little to no fragrance. As nice as the Pen's was, it was too strong for me. And I didn't find it to be particularly healing.

I also used to own C&S's Oxford & Cambridge splash. Used it once and it was like putting fire on my skin. Smelled great, but no thanks -- at least, not as an AS.

Splashes are good but IMHO balm contains far more good ingredients that can not be found in any splash, to add all that good stuff it will turn into a balm, at least that is what I think and found out.

Speick is a great splash +1 for that

Any really expensive after shaves that I've checked out have practically the same ingredients as the matching cologne. It's like they changed just a few ingredients, and not for the better, so they could make a full line available. Why pay close to $100 for something in which alcohol is the only ingredient I recognize, when I can pay $10-$15 and get a super performer like Proraso.

more... more - keep it up, gents!

I won't buy expensive AS... I won't buy expensive AS... I won't buy expensive AS...

On the other hand... if it's old and out of print....

From the fancy ASBs in my rotation, my vote goes to Acqua di Parma balm and Penhaligon's balm.

However, I have not tried all of the fancy ASB's yet. :001_rolle

Most of the good natural ingredients once used in balms like cocoa butter and lanolin have been replaced with cyclopentasiloxane as well as dimethylsiloxane, basically silicone fluid. These things make your skin feel better but have no healing properties.
The only way to tell is by requesting the MSDS sheet and looking for key words.
You may be paying more for just a scent( as has been previously explained).

I have Santa Maria Novella Lavender on my wish list,I hear it is excellent.
I bought the Aqua Di Parma balm and was not impressed,I like Bigelow 1200 asb better.

I've occasionally been tempted to buy high end aftershaves, but in the end I don't. I have two reasons. First, I'm not entirely convinced that any aftershave is really healing--or more healing (Pinaud VI Bay Rum is the exception--it's the negation of all things healing!). So I'm not willing to invest any extra coin for properties that I don't actually believe in. It would have to be for the fragrance. When I get to that point, I realize that I have some good unscented aftershaves (like Lucido, among others) that will go with anything. So I back off. Then I spend the money that I saved on another more expensive fragrance. It's a win-win proposition!

that is wise.

besides, if one buys enough inexpensive AS (say vintage OS, for instance) it becomes expensive - and both switches (spending too much $$ on unneeded luxury and having a good AS) are thrown!

You're absolutely right! I can't wait to explain this to my wife.

I don't buy high end AS. I find most of the cheaper AS do the same thing. Scent is fleeting in most AS. I would rather spend my money on high end EDT.
