What's new

hey, i just got this

I cut out the center of a reg DE blade to fit. Comparable to a gillette New, imho, so not really worth the effort to mod a blade more than once - just to say you shaved with it. NOS blades are likely too dull to use anymore, but a neat contraption nonetheless.

edit: I take that back about the New comparison. It was a different head style I used. Yours is more similar in style to an Old Type head, and I didn't try that one out.

how do you load this?

I'd assume you cut it from the side and you put the blade around the post the same way you'd put a "do not disturb" sign on a doorknob

You slide the blade over the cap. It tilts out that way to poke through it. Funky, yes. Handy, no. I'll work on getting a pic of an original blade. They have a huge oval hole through the middle of them to accommodate sliding the cap through.

and here it is

You drop a blade on it. Below is a picture of how a plain blade and a Segal balde next to each other look like, and what would have to be removed from a new blade to fit in a Segal. CountryJoe sells NOS Segal blades( http://www.countryjoescollectiblestuff.com/segal-blades.html ), where I got mine, and I admit I tried one, but lately I have been slacking on daily shaving, so I can't judge how well it shaved. I now have two Segal's, and my newest one is just like yours(in fact, I looked over on my sewing machine to make sure mine was still there :001_rolle ).

I have asked more than once in the forums here if anyone thinks it would be possible to stick a "new" blade in a laser cutter, and have it cut out the correct shape. Since a laser cutter limits the heating, it shouldn't distort the blade, and a proper jig should allow any blade to be dropped in and cut identically. I have also wondered myself if it would be possible to create a tool like one of those paper cut out things that you buy for scrap booking that you could drop a new blade in and press down to "stamp" the shape out.

BTW, I see a Segal wrapper in the background. Was there a blade in it?

Both excellent ideas. I like the laser cutter idea best. Wouldn't that be cool? All those proprietary blades that could be fashioned quickly from regular DE blades? If a member here had such a machine, he could make a small fortune repackaging custom feathers.

I just used a marker and a scissors on mine. Yep, the blade warps a bit, but I didn't notice that it had any affect on the shave. Tightening the blade down fixed that. And it was a terrific pain cutting it.

yes, it came with a few blades wrapped up.

im try them small surgical scissors or cuticle cutters and try to shape some derbys into segal blades.

The Segal shaves very well. I picked up a box (20 packets) of NOS blades on eBay not too long ago for about $25. The pivoting head is really cool.

Those blades are so similar I bet thats what the did to make their blades, get some company to make DE blanks and stamp them out, looks easy enough.

Personally what I would do is go find an old (or new) large chisel and just re-grind it to that shape. Then you just put the blade down on a cutting mat or block of wood and give it a good whack on each side...he presto...home made stamping tool ??
