Help with shaving neck area...

Hi. The growth on my neck grows from west to east and east to west (opposite sides) and I'm having a difficult time shaving that area with a straight. Any tips? Thanks.

If you have just that pattern, you're lucky. Many people have a mass of swirls and whacked out growth patterns across short scales.
Why not try the 'Shaving WTG grip' using a slant or a sything motion on your neck, and then switching hands to do the other side. Also, try the XTG/Touch Up grip.

Good luck. Figuring out your 'whisker map' and how to handle it takes a while, but you will find what works for you.

Thanks Woodash.

I do use them grips while going across the grain on other parts of my face. I just find it difficult on the neck area. Earlier I even started to try an upside down grip with my hand over my head (similar to when you stretch your skin on your face). I realised it wasn't a good idea though :w00t:

I will get it in the end

Take it slow, that's the important bit!

Yeah I do take it slow. I've only been using a straight for around a month so I'm not expecting miracles yet. Thanks.

That's good! Steve's link on how to hold the straight should give you an idea, there are different grips but those are pretty good to start with.

After a month, you must be having DFS shaves on a regular basis? How long does it take you to shave?

Yeah I get pretty good shaves nearly every time. I always miss bits that I go over again later on the moustache and chin area. And it's always rough under my chin and upper neck, because of the XTG thing.

I can get BBS on my cheeks and lower neck, although I get some irritation on the lower neck usually.

And it takes around 40 minutes to shave.

But I'm enjoying it so far.

That's very good! :thumbup1:

Your time will go down naturally. I never thought I would be quicker with a straight than a DE one day...

I say rough on the upper neck and under the chin, but it isn't really rough, just not BBS. But it's perfectly acceptable.

Yeah I've gotten faster since I first started. I don't really mind that it's taking so long as I enjoy the process :001_smile

It takes time to master such a growth pattern, especially with a str8. The hair on my neck grows completely E---W with a little S---N at the base of the neck thrown in for good measure.

I start out completely with XTG passes on the neck. First one is S---N up to the jawline. Second pass is opposite the first.... from the jawline to mid-way down (if I go any farther I run the risk of running into those pesky hairs growing S---N from the base of my neck and thus going ATG).

This has worked very well. I get almost BBS using just a str8 everytime in this method. If I want to push it a tad further, I do a chevron (V pattern) which is as close to ATG as I can get. I do this by doing the top part of the V from the jaw down to midway on my neck (45 degrees or so against the direction of growth) and then a similar stroke from the base of the neck up to mid way on my neck....again at a 45 degree angle.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

For me, W-E on the right side of my face and a nw-se on the left side. To get most of the hair in that area I actually pull my cheek upward and pull the blade ATG along my jawline. This helps with most of the hair under my jaw. The rest of the neck area I do multiple XTG passes with both hands to get a cross pattern going on the hard to reach area.

I tried using a DE for my neck but it turned out to not get as close and did a ton of damage. Burn, pain while shaving, a cut or two. I'd be better off shaving with a prison tile filed into a shiv.

I have no experience with a straight yet. But I do have some difficulty with my DE on my neck. I have found the Gillette Slide to work pretty good. Not sure I would be brave enough to try it with a straight but I think I could get there. Just a suggestion, good luck.
