Help with brushes

I have been wet shaving for about 6 months now, I bought a cheap VDH boar bruch at the local CVS.
About 2 months ago, I "upgraded" and bought a C&E Super Badger Shaving brush.

The VDH brush is broke in fine and work well, for a 7 dollar brush.. The C&E well, to put is plainly in too soft, very little backbone.
I find that I get better lather with the badger ( duh ) .

So here is my question, is there a stiffer badger brush out there? Or do I just go and buy a Semogue or Omega Boar brush so I can keep the stiffness?

Most Simpsons brushes are going to be stiffer, though none will ever feel quite like boar (I like both, for the record). The stiffest badger brush I've used was a Simpsons "Ehsan" (a two-band version of the Colonel) but I imagine most of their two-bands are closer to what you're looking for.

Simpsons or Rooney badgers will fit your bill for stiffness/backbone. Another badger option is a custom made brush. The custom brushmakers ie Rudy Vey, a member here, purchase pre made knots, in some cases the knots are made for them to your specs, they make the handle for the brush & then glue the knot to the loft you specify.

There are some threads on here where you can see numerous custom made brushes. I recommend you contact a couple of brush makers & they will gladly show you examples of their work & work with you to get you what you are looking for.

Good luck.

Try a Rooney 1/1, or, if you don't mind spending the money, a Chubby 1 in best. The sensory experience is like nothing else

A custom 21mm diameter brush with a 45mm loft may be the answer (Rudy Vey or Shavemac, depending on how much money you're looking to spend). The 1/1 Super Silvertip is also a great suggestion.

My vote would be for a Semogue SOC or 2000. First of all, you can buy both for a fraction of the price of a Rooney or a Simpson. Second, once they're broken in (about a month) they're as comfortable as most badgers with enough backbone to handle any hard soap out there. Go for the pig.:thumbup1:

The Chubby 1 in Best is a very dense brush. You'll be amazed at how much badger hair is jammed into the handle. I have a Chubby 1 Super and it is one of my favorites for face lathering soaps. I have liked it so much I just ordered a Chubby 2.

The Rooney 1/1 Pure will be less dense and probably more scritchy on the face given the Pure grade of badger. I have not tried a 1/1 in Pure but have a 1/1 in Finest. The loft is very short and the knot dense, but the Finest bristle is a very different kind than the Pure. If you opt for the Rooney 1/1, I might suggest going for the Super hair grade in it. It will have soft tips but plenty of backbone for attacking soaps.
