What's new

help picking a badger brush, Edwin Jagger or Simpson

Currently I have been DE shaving with an omega boar brush and looking to upgrade to a badger. I like to bowl lather and I prefer using soaps rather than creams. I'm looking for a decent brush at the best price, I do not have the highest budget, looking for something in the 50-60 range. I would like a nice soft brush (I understand that silvertip is the softest, but a little out of my budget)

The two brushes which I have been debating between are the Edwin Jagger best badger and the Simpsons Berkeley 46 best badger. Does anyone have any experience with these two brushes, or perhaps something else to recommend?\

Thanks

I have the EJ Super. It's a fine brush. Not a ton of back bone but the perfect balance for me between scritch and softness. I haven't tried the Berkeley but I hear it's a wonderful brush. I'm sure more people with experience with both will weigh in.

New brushes are so much fun. There are a lot of great ones out there in that price range. Happy picking.

I've got the Edwin Jagger best badger travel size brush, been using it for a couple weeks, at least. I find it to be a good balance of backbone and softness - it feels nice on the face, but it's great for face lathering. It feels nice enough, actually, that i'll re-lather sometimes, just so i can brush my face with it
So i would recommend the EJ best based on my use, go with the full size, though, if you want to use it in a bowl.

I got moves like Jagger
The Berkeley in Best is still my go-to brush. I just got a Tulip-2 2-band super and there's not much difference between the softness of the knots. The Berkeley is small enough to dry quickly for road trips and easily holds enough lather for 3-passes. I face lather and love the flow-though of the knot. Hard to go wrong with this one.

I'd definitely go with a Simpson, Berkeley 46 is probably what you need.

I own 2 Edwin Jagger brushes, a super badger, and a silvertip. Although I only one Simpson Wee Scot, the best grade hair trumps the Edwin Jagger offerings. The density of the my small Wee Scot is quite a bit more as well, I can only imagine how much better a larger Simpson brush would be. I vastly prefer the feel and "backbone" of the Simpson brush. The tips of the brush are also quite soft, softer than EJ super hair.

If softness is important to you an Omega 636 is a good choice at your price point. If you use soaps I'd go with a Simpson. You can get a Colonel with B&B discount from West Coast Shaving. That's a great all around performer.
