help me identify a razor

i posted pics of a straight razor we found in an 1800's secretariat. I have never seen anything like it before and have not been able to find any info on the internet it is a JA HENCKELS but it has a wooden handle and does not open and close any guesses

the pics are there now can u not see them

Much better. Now everyone can see them, although I took a peak at them in your album after you send that PM. Anyway, I'm not quite sure what to make of the handle. It almost looks makeshift judging from the close-ups, like the original scales broke and the owner at that time put that handle on in their place. Then again I could be wrong. As for the blade, it looks nice though it's showing some wear, particularly around the toe or tip of the razor. Other than that I don't see any reason why it wouldn't clean up nicely. Henckels are great razors. They were one of dozens of straight razor makers based out of Solingen, Germany, a city renowned for its swordsmiths and other makers of blades, knives and such. So much so is earned the nickname the City of Blades.

Looks to me, a Henkels razor, stuffed into a drywall saw handle. :frown:
Blade looks to be in decent shape, although a bit of honewear on the toe. Unfortunately, in it's current shape, not worth much, and it is much newer than the 1800's, being a full hollow blade.

Exactly. The poor razor. :frown:

*shudder*

Do you guys think that maybe some of that toe wear might be because the poor razor was used for something other than the face after having been shoved in said handle.

Like maybe it was used as a letter opener .

A letter opener? Oh my, I think you might be right! I mean that would certainly explain the handle, but who would do such a horrible thing?

Letter opener is better than snapping turtle skinner.....

No, I didn't make that up. I really wish I did.... I got if off an ebay description.

Turtle skinner? People actually skin turtles? Why? I mean there's pretty much just the head and legs that you would be able to skin? :confused1

It was found in a secretary desk, so I'd say that's a good guess. I too think the handle looks homemade.

okay stupid question u guys are talking about toe wear on this razor I found. Which end is the toe??? I know I do not know anything I also found a straight razor in there by Dixon Cutlery of germany that has an engraving of a flag and says southern pride it is a little longer and rounder. Is the rounder end the toe???
