Help a virgin out.

Hello Gents,

I'm looking for a shave ready razor. I have never used one before in my 47 years on this earth. Help me have some fun! :001_rolle

Hi Mark, welcome to B&B. What type of razor do you think you would want to start with? The term "shave ready" usually applies to straight razors,

Yes I was hoping for a good starter straight razor. Price is not a big issue. I would prefer something with good quality steel and maybe $200 or less.

I think this should be in the WTB section but have a look at the BST section of the forum, you should be able to find what you are looking for. Don't forget the strop!

Ok, you should have many offers inbound with that clarified. Check the "Buy/Sell/Trade" forum there were a couple straights there :).

Or read around for a couple days, unless of course you have perused some of the other information available. Worst thing I did when I rediscovered wet shaving was to buy everything in sight, particularly with respect to straight razors

Hey Mark,

Welcome to Straight Razor Shaving & B&B :w00t: If you check the BST, you have a good chance of finding something suitable. You may consider posting a WTB thread.

When you decide to buy, whether you choose new or vintage, just pick one that catches your eye and have fun. There is no "right" first razor, but there are certainly some "wrong" ones. You will be better served to avoid eBay for now. There are several vendors found here that provide great products and great service.

If you need anything specific, just ask! :001_smile

Enjoy the Journey!

Hi mark, welcome, if you look over at one of the more prominent straight razor on line sites they have the Dovo 6/8 special with a latigo strop combo this month for $119, really hard to beat that set up and price.

Mark, welcome. If you don't mind another opinion, here's mine -- based on having been in your shoes not too long ago.

The razors available on BST are generally excellent, but they are also typically vintage razors that may or may not be the easiest to learn with. What you want now is to make the process of LEARNING to shave as easy as possible, and for that, I would honestly recommend another route.

There are a number of very, very highly regarded retailers of new, shave ready straight razors on the internet -- Classic Shaving, Straight Razor Designs and Vintage Blades are all excellent choices. Pick out a nice Thiers or Dovo razor that looks good to you, and you will be on your way to a great experience. The only requirements I would say are (1) get a ROUND POINT razor, not a square point, as it is a little harder to start learning with a square point, and (2) get a 5/8 or 6/8 razor, but not any wider, because the wider ones are a little difficult to learn how to strop.

And most of all, great to hear that you will be trying this out!! You will get the shave of a lifetime with a little bit of practice, so stick with it!!

Hello from another straight newbie, i only paid a quarter of what you have but i am having loads of fun learning and i am sure you will to.

Thanks for the good tips. :)

I'll take the advice and go shopping for a round point, 5/8 razor. I'll let you know how it goes.

Mark

Welcome aboard!

My advice would be to read up on how to shave with a straight (Joel's guide is an excellent resource), get a shave ready straight and get to work. The first shave may be a little daunting but it is the hardest one. Its all down hill from there.

Oh, and don't be shy - ask plenty of questions. We all had to learn care of our fellow members.

Mark, welcome to B&B and more particularly to the niche that is the fun world of straights!

You've already had some good pointers. Read Joel's guide (several times) and watch the videos. As long as you respect the fact you've got a razor sharp* blade in your hand, it's not THAT scary!

* Before using a straight, I thought I knew what "razor sharp" meant...here it's a different order of magnitude!! :scared::lol:

Ok, I took the plunge and ordered a Pre-sharpened or shave ready Davo 5/8 razor. Perhaps I should video tape my first attempt. It might be fun or funny depending how I do. :)
