What's new

Hello! This is how I've begun my journey.

Greetings B&B comrades! I've been lurking for a couple of weeks to learn the ins and outs of DE wet shaving. My former system wasn't that far off but I'm a perfectionist and want to get a clean shave with no irritation. I'm sure it will happen sooner than later thanks to the great community here.

I started shaving with the DE razor last week and had some decent results. I was watching mantic59's videos and decided that going to get a professional shave would be a good way to get the feel of an expert shave. Thus my first mistake was made.

I went to TAOS in Glendale, CA for their royal shave. I told the barber that I'm very sensitive on my neck. My first surprise was that he didn't freshen up the lather when he started the second half of my face. Trust the professional. He moved to the neck and without relathering started shaving XTG. Red flag! Trust the professional. He relathered, did a second pass, and I was beginning to feel a little raw. Trust the professional. He moved on to some touch ups and then relathered under my chin and broke out his secret weapon, a Gillette fusion. As he started shaving ATG I knew I was totally screwed. He did a clay mask on my face, which felt really nice, and then finished up with a cold towel and some balm.

This was two days ago. Today I'm on a job with a crew I've never worked with and it looks like I have a bad case of oral herpes. I have razor burn around my lips, on about a quarter of my face, and all over my neck and under-chin. I was putting aftershave on it but read last night to just do aloe and I've been sticking with that.

So there's my first post. Sorry so long and thanks for listening. I really wanted to warn the community about this. I'm really looking forward to much more positive posts in the future!

Welcome to B&B.

Yikes, sounds like this guy was an amateur not a pro. IMO, the best shaves are those you do yourself.

This is a great community so if you have any questions, just ask.

Sounds painful! Welcome to B&B. Agreed that the best shave it the one you give yourself.

Thanks! I was really surprised how stingy he was with the lather. Don't they want to sell that stuff?!?

You have convinced me to never get shaved there. It sounded like like such a treat till I read your post. Thanks. Welcome, and get ready to truly enjoy your shaving.

I feel your pain. I made this same mistake about an hour before having my engagement photos taken...bad decision. At the time I thought I was the problem...after spending some time around here, I think differently. I had sworn off barber shaves, but will get one the first chance I get when I am somewhere I feel I can trust the barber (Italy, England...).

It looks like the shave that mantic59 got at the Wynn was a good one. I might give it another go there the next time I'm in Vegas.

Its truly a shame. There's something really special about letting go of the natural fear of having a man hold a blade to your throat and truly relax. Really though, I'm excited to give myself a relaxing shave.
