What's new

Hello all, Some old DE razors

A customer gave these to me and I thought it would be nice to put them all in a frame of some kind and display them in my barbershop . Any thoughts ?

Welcome to B&B! Nice scoop on the razors, thats a collection all by itself.

I would use the techniques in the Restore Wiki and then put them in a nice shadow box. They should clean up really well and are most likely still in great working order.

Since that picture was taken I have used scrubbing bubbles and a toothbrush to clean them so far . I am not sure how much I want to clean them yet . There is quite a bit of tarnish and some rust as well as some green oxidation .
They are all in working order and I'll bet that someone here can ID every razor in the picture and I would love to know what they all are . Can someone post a link to pictures of a shadow box or other ways to display these ? Thanks for the link Loric.

There will be a date code under the head of the Gillettes, a letter and number.
The letter corresponds to a year and the number corresponds to the quarter of the year it was made.

Thank you so much for the ID and links , Phil .

EDIT: After a couple of hours of searching the forum I have more info .

The 40's Superspeed is a prewar model from '38-'41 ; The Tech is a '51 1st q. ; The Fatboy is a '59 ; The Unknown is actually an Old Type that is (sadly) missing it's handle ( someone had put an old pen cap on the razor , I believe ) ; The Superspeed is a '76 ; The Red Tip is a '51 ; and the Slim Adjustable is a '65 4th q.

Phil , you have a good eye .

Anyone else have any suggestions or corrections ?

Another barber! welcome. Well, I can't say another, yet. I'll finish barber school this Friday. Pre-state exam and haircut/shave next week. State exam next week.

There are a number of barbers around these parts.

Have fun getting around in here. Great info. Even better people.

Kevin

The 76 superspeed is generaly called the Black Handled Superspeed. (If it is a second quarter, W-2, I'd be seriously interested in buying it as a birth year razor)

The orphaned handle could be and Ever-Ready or a Gem, but it was from a Single Edge safety razor. The prewar tech is generally referred to as the Fat Handled Tech.

Definitely clean them up to a usably standard. Even if you don't plan on using them. The shinier they are, the more attractive the display will look.

That's the funniest home modification I've ever seen!:lol::lol::lol:

Related thought - the loose handle you have there might fit that razor - it won't be historically accurate, but mixing and matching handles and heads was actually pretty common.

Good luck with your exams . I have been barbering since 10 /79 .
I have tried other vocations through the years but I always find myself standing behind a chair somewhere .

I think they need a clean..

O.K. I'll try my hand at it
Pictures to follow...

By the way Mods , Since I have been shaving myself and others for over 30 years do I still have to be a 'Wetshaver Wannabe" ?

Just kidding . sort of .

Well I polished them with Blue Magic ( an automotive product ) and they still had a lot of tarnish so I soaked them in a 1/3 ammonia/water mixture for 30 minutes . Now they are quite a bit cleaner . What's my next step ?

Check the wiki, there's a pretty article about cleaning options. Your safest course of action is Scrubbing Bubbles for about 15 minutes then hit it with the old toothbrush.

That black-handled model looks a lot like my daily-use Schick except that the handle is shorter. Also, I think mine is older (if that one is the '76 you mention, I have trouble matching name to razor from the way you wrote it). Nice find!

Shave with each of them for two weeks a piece!!

After 12 weeks of using a DE razor, you will probably never go back to what you were using previously! :w00t::w00t:

Uh , Yeah , Uh , about that ...
I have been the owner of a full beard for about two years now :frown2:.
I used to spend 10 minutes a day shaving ; now I spend about 5 minutes a week trimming my beard .

I went ahead and filed the threads down on the old handle and attached it to the Old Style head . Right now it's just a friction fit but I thought I might try a more permanent solution . JB Weld , perhaps ?
