Held a futur, first time seeing one

I held a future for the first time yesterday. I understand many like this razor and I am sure it shaves as nice as can be. I hope no one minds me voicing what I found out for myself, and I dont mean to sound harsh. For me I think the head on the futur is too big. The razor seems too heavy. The handle is quite slippery and overall its just too different from what I have used in the last 35 years. Ill stick to my regular razors. Now, I just received a new R89, this muhle fits right into what I am use to. Although, I will need to adjust to the R89's slightly bigger handle, but what a razor! I understand that the futur is a different animal. I understand for some shavers, the futur is the best thing going. You have to remember everyones face whiskers are different, right? For me if I were to pick my only razor it would be a single ring old style razor, and thats the razor I tend to grab the most. You have to admit that a future is completely at the other end of the spectrum. best papi.

I was surprised at how large and heavy the futur was when I got mine compared with my vintage Gillette's. Actually, it gives great shaves and yes, it's a bit tricky getting right under the nose.

Other than that one area, it is greatness. I'll admit though, I've never opened it past 4. A futur on the wide open setting would be very aggressive.

I do like the ability to fine tune the settings since there no set "clicks" when setting the level of aggression.

It's a hefty razor, that's for sure. However, once you master its use it does "shrink" somewhat, meaning you adapt to its relative bulk and can put its size and adjustability to good use.

I thought that I wanted a vision until I went to the AOS store and actually compared them. The Futur seems to me at the top end in terms of size, and I can see how some would think it's too big. I thought that the vision was too big. The Futur is also very heavy, but I like that. Overall I have no complaints about it.

ah I see, said the blind man that cut wood and saw. To answer the question. I did'nt shave with one, YET. I believe what your saying. I admit its not a good idea for me to judge a product without using it. I am glad to hear that all of you sensed the same, but now have adjusted to the size. If you think about it that Pils seems to be a bit top heavy also. I think it comes down to the amount of need one may have getting there face clean. Or in other words the tool for the job. Put it this way in a matter of speaking. One person may need two blades a day while some other could get 4 shaves from one blade. I could see the futur being very effective shaving the best of all. I could tell that just by holding it also.

Futur user weighing in here...

It's a big dog for sure. It weighs a ton. It's lacks the tradition and nostalgia of the other razors I have and use. I have yet to perfect the quarter inch of my upper lip that is just under my nose, since...well, I like my nose and want to keep it.

On the other hand, it's cool. It has technology on it's side. It is a departure from the standards of years gone by. It looks, loads and feels very different.

I have been using my other razors just as much and at this point, I have no dead favorite.. I like them all.

Here's how I see it...

I am a photographer... I have a 1970's rangefinder.. full manual, no interchangeable lenses, no hot shoe.. bare bones. I also have a N*kon F5...last of the great pro film camera's but still an awesome piece of kit. I shoot most often with a N*kon D3. Not the absolute newest, but it is a true top line pro digital..cost me about $5k... Here-in is the perfect parallel to my shaving kit.. An ABC Pocket Gillette open comb, a Hoffritz HD clone with a slant bar and the Futur. All get used, I enjoy each for what they are and they all make me smile. Do I like one more than the other? Yeah.. I like the D3 most...:001_rolle

good comparison :thumbup1:

i ahev used a futur exclusively for the past 6 months; started with a tech, then a 60's tto then a 50's ss for the sirst almost year;

yes the futur - satin - is a different animal;

heavier, yes; tricky, initially, in tight spaces - above stache/beneath nose;

but no nicked earlobes is a bonus - it took swtiching over to this razor to realize that the exposed blade corners were periodically nicking my earlobes, which bleed like stink!!
the futur encloses the entire blade; bulkier yes; more protective though;
