Heading to Portland ME...any good shaving hotspots?

I am heading with SWMBO to Portland in October for her family reunion. Any shaving places I should check out? I am already going to try and make it to Georgetown Pottery!!!!

Sluggo, unfortunately there are no really great shaving places here in Portland. There's a place that sells AOS stuff and a place that sells T&H. There's a natural products place down in the Old Port that apparently makes a really good shaving cream that I'm going to have to try. The trek to Georgetown will be well worth it. It's a nice drive up Route 1 to Bath and then you bang a left and keep on going. What Portland doesn't have in shaving establishments we make up for in fine eating and drinking establishments. If you need any recommendations, let me know.

Well that kills the possibility of a side trip to NYC for a visit to Pasteur's and Cambridge Chemists.

I have one non shaving related suggestion for you. Get up way early and take a day trip to Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, on Mount Desert Island.

When you are there, you MUST eat at Jordan's on Cottage street for breakfast. The fresh blueberry pancakes alone are worth the trip.

You can also try some Lobster Ice Cream at one of the ice cream shops there.

At another ice cream shop, we got the poor girl behind the counter all upset when I ordered the 'Nuttin Huffin Puffin" ice cream . It was Reese's Pieces, mini marshmallows, peanuts in a vanilla ice cream base. I started joking around that I got ripped off since it didn't taste anything like puffin. One of my friends pointed to a Reese's piece and said, "No, I think you got some beak there" and another pointed to the mini marshmallow and said, "That looks like some puffin meat - bet it tastes just like chicken!" This was too much for her as she stated rather loudly, "There were no puffins harmed in the making of this ice cream!":lol:

Yes a creamy vanilla butter base with little itty bits of lobster meat in it.

I'm sorry, Lou, but ice cream is one thing that most definitely should not contain meat.

You sound like someone who has never dipped his french fries in his chocolate shake!

I never said I bought the lobster ice cream. Any issues about ice cream should or should not contain, like puffins, needs to be brought to the attention of the Maine-iacs.

The only reason why lobster ice cream exists is for the tourists who only associate lobster with Maine. I can tell you that the locals probably aren't buying pints of that stuff by the armful. They're probably laughing at the tourists who are.

By the way, on a shaving shopping note, I just walked by one of the few places that carries shaving creams/soaps and saw that they are having a 25% off sale on all T&H products. Hmmmm...Might have to stop in there at lunch on Monday.

Hmmm...I don't know. We had one for several years here in South Portland. I could never figure out why people would go to Red Lobster and pay ridiculously inflated prices for...lobster...when you could go down to one of the fish markets on Commercials Street in Portland and get a lobster, cooked, for a third of the price.

Portland is still one of those cities with the highest number of restaurants per capita. With all of the really good locally owned restaurants in this town, I'm still amazed that people will stand in line for eternity at Olive Garden or Outback or Fridays, etc, etc. If you ever come back up here Lou, let me know and I'll get you directed to the right places.

What about any good places that I could go looking for razors...any antique stores worth hitting up?

There are tons of antique stores in the greater Portland area but I've never ventured into them to see if they have razors. You might want to call a couple and see if anyone has anything.

If you can, just head over to Colonian Drug in Harvard Square in Cambridge , MA as well as Leavitt & Pierce. Just about an hour drive and they have EVERYTHING you would like!!
