Head shavers, do you prefer bald?

Hey guys, I've been loosing my hair slowly for a few years now and it's getting pretty thin. I'm tired of looking in the mirror and looking twice my age. I'm about to take the plunge but was wondering how all you bald guys feel about it.

How long did it take you to get used to it after your first head shave?

Do you like it better or wish you could still have your hair?

How does your woman view your baldness?

Any tips or insight would be appreciated.

It took me a couple of weeks to get used to it when I first shaved my head. And back then I was only using clippers not a blade. The first few days I compulsively rubbed my head, and for that matter, so did the ladies. It was also kind of cool because for months I would get surprised looks every time I saw someone for the first time with my new do.

I was already shaving down to the skin when I met my wife, so I've continued to do that. Just the other day she told me she prefers a little more stubble (after five years of marriage), so I'm going to spread out my shaves from every other day to every four or five days.

It's a really great feeling, and since you presumably enjoy shaving, it just gives you one more thing to enjoy. I rarely shave head and face together so if I already shaved my face but I read about something on the forum that I want to try, or if a new soap arrives in the daily mail, I can lather up and shave my head.

Don't hesitate to jump in. You'll probably never want to go back.

Cheers,
Rob

ive been shaving my head a dozen years.
i'd prefer a full thick head of hair like when i was a kid....but that wasnt the case.

i shaved my head....at first every day and now every other day.

took me a few weeks to get used to it....everytime i looked in the mirror i couldnt believe it.

people around me asked why i did it too.

just tell them you are tired for paying for hair cuts.

I enjoy shaving my head, and like the bald look much better than the male-pattern baldness look, and ive had a few women tell me they prefer it. But I do wish I had the choice of growing out a full head of hair if I wanted to.

I have been head shaving for about 6 or 7 years now. Started for the same reasons as you, my wife prefers it smooth and has even said she doesnt want me using rogaine. You being in the military, though rank may affect this some, i used to get a lot of guys thinking they could rub my head. I never liked that so I had to act the tough guy to keep hands off. But like ironfisted said, do them seperate and it gives you time to try some new stuff

Thanks for the input/support guys. I just got done clipping as short as I could get it, closer than basic training. I was going to leave it at that but couldn't stand it. I went for the shave, one pass WTG. God I'm hoping it grows on me. Pretty freakin wierd at the moment.

It does look better than the half bald look though.

I don't think anyone would dare touch my head at work, I'm second ranking individual in my section.

I am trying to mentally prepare for the comments and looks though.

I've been head shaving for nine years. I happen to have a nicely rounded head (so I'm told) so I like the look a lot. In fact, on my passport my hair color is listed as bald. That's how strongly I feel about never growing it back again.
Enjoy it, embrace it, and use it as an excuse to buy a big fat knotted badger so you can cover more area

I still have all my hair, I used to cut it with a electric clipper (being in the military) but one day I shaved everything off and have done that every day since. It just prolongs my shaving pleasure ;-)

I prefer it above all that grey hair, most woman like it, they say it makes me look younger. It's not that much work, about 4-5 minutes at most (I do one pass with a feather DX for super smooth).

Why not try it, you can always let it grow back.

I would echo almost all of the comments so far. I started shaving my head over 10 years ago for the same reason as you and if I could have a full head of today I wouldn't do it. Embrace it, own it, wear it with confidence. How you feel about a it reflects in how people respond to it and I feel it has become a lot more socially accepted than it was even 10 years ago. If you're unsure, try skipping a couple of days between shaves to experiement with how you like a little stubble. I like it BBS.

Very wise of you to go WTG. The nape of the neck gets rubbed by your uniforms collar and sweat/dirt etc. will try to irritate. I do ATG on the dome cause there is so little there, but on the back I stay with the grain and I always alum and lotion my neck, otherwise I get real bad irritation and bumps. As for second ranking in your section, me being navy, how bid is a section? And does that make you a "Sir" ?

Just started doing this again, after dabbling with it in the fall. No hair is better than some hair, IMO. And bald looks much better than a combover. I figure it's going anyway, and it's already gray, so I'm taking charge of my appearance this way.

I'm a relatively young guy with a full head of hair, but I've been shaving it off with clippers for the last eight years. I have a round head so it works out quite well for me and it's way easier than trying to maintain an actual haircut. I always felt that guys who are losing their hair should seriously consider shaving it all off. I've never seen a balding man with a shaved head and thought to myself, "He would look so much better with a comb over."

The phrase "Full Head Of Hair" has always sounded weird,it's been used several times in this thread. It's just as odd as saying shaving your head is an "Empty Head Of Skin"

I've been shaving my head with clippers for the last 6 years. Currently using an Oster 76 and a 00000 blade. Can't grow anything on top and I never have a bad a hair day. I love it.

Shaving my head set me free. My hair was getting pretty thin in my mid twenties. I never wanted to take my hat off in public. My friends talked me into shaving my head and i liked it immediately. Women also seemed to like it. I'm lucky to have a nice shaped head i guess.

Really a matter of personal opinion.
Thinning hair..receding hairline...whatever the description.
Whatever makes you comfortable.
In the warmer months I definitely prefer less (is more). Typically would shave my head during the summer months.
My wife would "tolerate" it.
Certainly no bad hair days!!! Shorter is just easier to manage - particularly when I am travelling.
IMHO - YMMV.

Would I rather have the big curly locks from my late teens... you betchya!

I've been shaving my noggin for a while now and love the look; definitely looks better on certain head shapes; also looks a little better if your skin is a bit darker than whiter.

I would recommend clipping down to "00" for a while, then starting when you are going on vacation so the noggin can get some color, if you are fair skinned. Looks weird at first because of the color change but gets better and better over time.

Don't kid yourself... there is a lot of women that love it; same as there is a ton of women that love huge beards.

I shave mine every second day, two passes. Clipper look is nice as well, i prefer being smooth. MPB look is do-able if you are older and more sophisticated (think Sean Connery); comb-over, in my opinion is brutal; I don't think any women like it and it looks silly.
