What's new

HBO's "The Pacific"

I saw the previews and it looks like it's worth watching. Unfortunately, I turned off my premium channels because of lack of quality programming. Since the Wire and Sopranos went off the air there has not been anything worth watching. I will wait until they put it out on DVD.

I went in just the opposite direction. I turned my HBO off a couple of years ago, but I turned it back on yesterday to watch this. I just watched a half-hour "making of" documentary/commercial and it looks pretty impressive.

Looks good!
I watched the whole Band of Brothers series twice! I really liked it. Let's hope the Pacific series will be just as great!

I'm looking forward to it. Both of my grandfathers served in the South Pacific. I probably won't get HBO, but I'll probably just buy the set wen they come out on DVD.

Man, what a great and underappreciated show. I miss it.

Completely agree. I'm really looking forward to it.

I've been starving for some good programming. If The Pacific is 3/4 as good as B of B, I'll be happy!

If The Pacific is anyting like Band of Brothers it should be a good quality show. Band of Brothers is one of those "movies" that i have to watch anytime it comes on TV

I can't wait till it comes on! I watched the whole season of band of brothers in one day.

I am so there. I just bought With the Old Breed by Eugene Sledge, one of the Marines showcased in The Pacific. I've only read the first two chapters, but I'm hooked. I have high expectations on the series.

Wonder if there will be any British forces mentioned in this?

My father was serving aboard the carrier HMS Indefatigable at Okinawa where he was nearly killed nipping to the galley to get a sandwich when a suicide bomber hit the tower and bits of it almost took the hair off his head! (The ship was serviceable 5 hours later) And he was also in Tokyo bay for the surrender.

He was an airframe artificer.

He always said the nearest he came to death in WW2 was when he was bitten by a trapdoor spider in Queensland!:crying:

I'll be looking, I have been re-reading Manchester's American Caesar but co-incidently.

In the special that I saw about the production, they said that they were going to keep a tighter focus than Band of Brothers--fewer main characters, with more detail about their lives. I think that we're going to learn a lot about E. B. Sledge, Robert Leckie, and John Basilone and the Marines around them. I don't think that there will be much more than that.

The special did, however, show the actor who plays Chesty Puller, so he will definitely make an appearance.
