What's new

Happy Christmas Season 2024!

Good Saturday morning all you folks of the Badger & Blade! Thanksgiving has passed, and Christmas season is upon us. :) This is my time, won't lie--my mother always said she never saw anybody who loved Christmas more than my grandmother but me, and I can see it now as I get older. We are now in-progress on the house. My wife just bought two vintage blow-mold toy soldiers to guard the front porch posts, and I'm working in the front room. Christmas tree is up in the living room ready to be decorated, and we put up my mother's tree in the front room/dining room last night--we've made it a tradition since her passing last year, in memory of all the Christmases we spent with her and my late dad. Train sets are out and getting installed, Christmas village will come later/soonish. Work in progress. :)

What are some of your favorite traditions for this time of year?

Hmmm...our family tradition is roasting fresh chestnuts during Christmas time.

It brings me such great joy in remembering that roasting chestnuts was always a 'huge' event and tradition in our family (I have 3 other brothers & 5 sisters), from scavenging (our neighbors who had chestnut trees most likely had another term...i.e.,'cabbaging'...stealing etc...), to sorting, to boiling, peeling and roasting.

The Mrs. and I have carried and passed down this family 'tradition' to our kids (when they come home for the holidays), and we hope they will pass on this humble and fun loving event to our grandchildren (certainty before Christmas because the good chestnuts will have passed their time).

The trees and villages are up. We have a mix of vintage and new ornaments along with villages that are 40 years old. Our entire life is on that tree, from our first Christmas to the kids and grandkids pictures and handmade ornaments. To say it’s special would be an understatement.

This Santa came from my mother’s side of the family. I would estimate the date of manufacture to be 1940s or early 1950s . I was told as a kid that Santa could see through those eyes and would watch me to make sure I was behaving. I remember army crawling to stay out of sight when I was being my normal self. The Santa had been packed away and was a bit damaged as it’s papier-mâché. Last year I decided to rebuild and repaint the damaged areas. He turned out pretty well for his age. I told our grandson the same thing about Santa being able to see him and he stayed out of that room for the rest of the day.😆

The warmth of the season is keeping my salty self content. As a Shellback sailor who rumbled in the engine room of an aircraft carrier, I can say that Santa has a rougher job because with how persnickety some folks can be about a gift, i wouldn’t want to have to be in charge of that endeavor. Anyway, the Christmas tree is up in my house, the wreaths are on the door and may you all be filled with the joy this time of year brings. Blessings to all!

This little tree was an antique store rescue. It was sitting in a corner crumpled and crushed up. My wife saw the antique bulbs and needlepoint decoration and decided she had to save it. It was dirty and the needlepoint had stained, so I carefully cleaned, restored and added lights to it. I would think from the style of the bulbs it’s early 50s.

Like it! That is a nice piece of work.

My mother had what I call a 'drop tree'--its in the shape of a wreath, you put up the trunk and attach it at the top, and DROP it--and it unfolds down in circles of garland and lights. We have it in our front room with a Lionel running around it.
