Has anyone scented their own aftershave balm?

I thought I might give it a try. I've got a bottle of Nivea Sensitive Skin Aftershave Balm that works pretty well but it doesn't have any scent to it. I thought I'd buy some essential oils and have a go at scenting it. I'm a big fan of lime so I thought I'd try some lime essential oil and perhaps a little bergamot essentail oil to give it a bit of zip. Anyway, the oils have been bought so when they turn up I'll have a play around with it.

I just bought some EO's to have a play.

I'm unsure, but I think you have to put the essential oil into a carrier oil such as almond oil or grape seed oil. 5% seems to be the ratio.

Essential oils as you will find out are very powerful and I think can be harmful if directly applied to the skin.

I have some Indian sandalwood, a rose, a sandalwood musk, frankinsense, lavender, jasmine and ylang ylang. I want to get some neroli which I think will mix well with the sandalwood. I know the rose and the frankinsense mix with it.

When you mix these things you get some delicious smells. They are all pretty good stand alone.

Some of these oils are not expensive e.g. lavender and lemon or limes. The sandalwood and the rose start to cost a bit more, but relative to the price of soaps or creams, the suppliers have got no excuse at the prices they charge to not use the best and to give a decent kick to the products.

Have fun and watch were you spill the stuff.

Not in an AS balm, but I oil cleanse my face. I add different EO's. I don't see why it wouldn't work for an AS balm.

By the way, you can go to Mama Bear's website and customize your own AS balm with any of her scents.

Well it worked out surprisingly well. The lime essential oil turned up so I put about 10 or 12 drops into the Nivea unscented balm and gave it a very good shake. Ater shaving I tried it out and it was really nice. I think the lime might need toning down a little. I'm not sure if I put too much or if the scent is just really strong. The Bergamot should tone it down when I put a few drops in when it turns up in the post. I'll certainly be doing it again. I've just bought 2 bottles of unscented whitch hazel so I'm going to have a play around with one of them.

If you want a balm with scent, go with something like Nivea Replenishing or Cooling. Your could try Proraso, or Musgo Real. That way, you needn't scent your own balm--Nivea Sensitive is unscented for a reason, after all. There are also recipes on this forum for making balms, I believe, though I do not know where they are.
