What's new

Hart Steel

This last post to the old thread is Nov. 2009. I would think that things have evolved one way of the other at Hart, given that it is essentially a hand made item and they have now been around for what, twice as long as they were at the Nov. post.

I have heard zilch recently.

Well, as luck would have it my Hart showed up this afternoon. I inspected it thoroughly and can find no flaws. Nice finish on the blade, even grind and bevel. I'm pretty pleased. Feels good and the scales are nice. I'll be giving it a spin tomorrow morning.

I have had my Hart Razor for a little over a week now. I am a newbie, so perhaps my review will not have much meat to it...

I received the razor in less than four days after I ordered it.The razor arrived in good shape. No chips or apparent flaws in the metal or the scales and the scales look alot better than I expected.

It passed the HHT out of the box. I have not stropped the razor at all (do not have a strop and am waiting for the guy in MD. to get back from his vacation to order a latigo.)

I have shaved 4 times with the razor and it still passes the HHT (though perhaps with a bit less "pop" than before).

My last shave was pretty darn good, I think. I suck a bit less than I did a week ago. Two passes WTG. Not bbs, but good enough to go out with.

I take care of the blade after I take care of my face and have not noticed any spots or discoloration.

So far I've been nothing but pleased and look forward to using it each morning. I figured I'd use it every day for a week before posting a review but unless something very unexpected happens it's a pretty excellent razor.

I posted a review of the Hart I won in the Carnival of Smiles raffle. While there are close to 1250 views, no further comments have been entered. Doghair's review would be welcome.

At the time of the review the razor had provided 10 shaves. Now with around 25 shaves it is still going strong. I last used it on two days growth and it continues to slice through whiskers like a hot knife through butter.

I've been pleased, but then I didn't pay for the razor either.

IYO, is it worth the price?

There's nothing fancy about it so I assume the money is in the performance.

Yes! Definitely worth rescaling if that is anyone's objection. I kind of like the scales but some ebony would look awesome too.

by all accounts theyre a good razor (ive not tried one, though) - I just cant get past the price. At the end of the day - it is a fairly standard razor in plastic scales.

(SRAD has nothing to do with sensible decisions or good value, though )

I just bought one. It's currently my only quarter hollow and everything else I own is full hollow (give or take 20 razors).

I shaved with it out of the box and it was just a little bit tuggy. I am going to send it for some pro honing and take it for another spin.

Hard to believe after all this time I still haven't bothered to learn how to hone yet.

I decided to give my new Hart razor another shot before getting it honed. I stropped 100 laps each on canvas and horse and lathered up to get rid of a 3-day beard.

I'm honestly pretty impressed. This is now my only non-full hollow blade (with the exception of a Tosuke kamisori) and so I'm getting used to shaving with it since the last time I used one was several months ago.

It was a pretty effortless shave. It got a little dicey on some ATG passes but I think I could have improved the technique a little by making the angle a little flatter. I don't necessarily need to do this with full hollows, typically.

All in all, I'm happy with the razor. I noticed some water marks on the blade already -- probably a result of the combination of alloy (different from most carbon-stell razors?) and the fact that it has a sateen finish. I always fully dry my razors but I don't put any oil unless I'm not planning on using it for a while. I'm going to polish the blade up when I get home today to get the marks off, and then I'll keep this one oiled from now on.

After two shaves (one okay and one great), I'd give it a 6 of 10 with room for improvement.

Thanks for reading!
