Harner Razors

Please do! I am considering a Harner or Hart. I would love to hear of your experiences as well with the Harners.

I have a Harner 11/16th 1/4 hollow and it is one of my favorites in my rotation. Very well made and I have just honed it after about 7 months using it about once a week. It took and edge very well. I am looking to purchase a Hart Steel for a couple of reasons, American made and all of the very early on problems have been eliminated and I am reading about happy owners + Tim Zowadas continuing support and interest in the folks at Hart.

I got 2 Harners,

they both take and seem to hold forever an amazing edge, I see another in my future, oh and as you can see the scales are a thing of beuty the precision of fit and finish and balance is perfect on them too.

That second one is migghty puurdy. Normally his stuff doesn't catch my eye, but that one is a dandy.

Does anyone have a Harner straight razor? If so, please tell me your opinions about it. Thanks.

Albeit seven years passed, this thread still pop as the first meaningful result on harner razor review.

I had two bokers and one dovo - shave twice a week - from early 2014. My favorite was the boker edelweiss - dovo is not my cup of tea and sold it unused.

I got a chance for a ready made harner iii with 52100 steel (not the premier xhp) full hollow. It is a large chunk of metal with short cutting blade. The balance is fully on the blade and the scale is a little jerky at 90 degree open. It cost me 300.

Now the shave - not the sharper than the just honed eldelweiss, but it cuts in an amazing balanced way that offered me an easy and cleaner than ever cut. No nicks sensed with alum block afterwards. Consider my current stress - a new born and a 2 year 1 month old, I am surprised on such a result.

In my opinion, the craftmanship is not on par of boker or other German makers, but it just cuts - on my hard mosash.

My first proper post on this straights sub forum.

Previously I had a terrible experience with a hart I had got. And since then was eyeing to do one ultimate upgrade to a proper straight so was eyeing one of harner's ones to learn and get good on and also enjoy the process.

I finally found an xhp in the kind of specs I liked on the classifieds in another forum, quickly bit on it coz my gut told me to do so, and I sent it back to harner for some little bit of customizing :) got it rescaled and also ground down a bit more to a half hollow from a 1/4 to 1/3 kinda hollow initially. It was a rather short one originally already, which drew me to it. So much easier to handle and maneuver as a straight shaving newbie!

After I honed it up a bit more myself.... First straight test shave was a huge success! Super smooth and nice feedback for the blade against the skin.

On my second proper straight shaving attempt I managed to clear up about 60pct of the face, even clearing up some bit of the upper lip and below the neck even going some bits against the grain!:)

Thanks to harner for such lovely work and a lovely straight I will use and love for a long time!!

And I have to say XHPs rock!!!

Great stuff!! Good to hear that your blade was taken care of to your liking and that your on the road to shaving success!!

@6Cuda6 thanks for that buddy!

Yes indeed after I got this almost "shorty" reground into a half hollow as I really was having my sights set on a half hollow.... And rescaled in that beautiful olive wood....
I was really happy with the final "re-customised" straight from butch.

Honing it up myself was a challenge but joy and Oh so satisfying when I got the final edge super smooth and shave ready.

(It had already come very well honed but I wanted to test my skills if I could hone it up even better. There was a tiny tiny microchip in the blade when I got it, didn't affect the shave but I wanted to fix it up. It likely occurred during shipping transit from the US to Asia.)

Butch is also the super kind of solid guy who backs his work, so if I couldn't take care of it well enough myself I could always send it back to him.

Thankfully after my second session on the stones slowly taking care of it, also removing a tiny tiny small heel hook I had caused on my first session when I had removed that microchip and put in a new bevel edge... I managed to smoothen and tidy up the heel part.
This straight had a support structure right at the heel, so to smoothen the edge towards the heel leading into the heel support... Is definitely tricky and takes care so as to not cause a horn / hook in the heel portion.

But otherwise, this xhp full stainless from butch is awesome.
Not the easiest to sharpen and requires more time and effort on the stones for sure but then on the flipside I'm sure they will hold their keen edges for a long long time without needing much stropping or honing for a long time.

The shave feel and result is great.
No tugging but a clean smooth shave with great tactile feedback.
Superb straight with great workmanship with that custom tough built to last and just cut and shave well kind of refinement. Beautiful scales too!:)
