Hard to find blades?

You can read my post here about everything that I just bought for my husband: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showth...usband-and-running-his-startup-set-by-you-all!

I was telling an elderly lady that I work with what I bought for him and she said her husband uses a safety razor that he's had for years but it's next to impossible to find blades around here and even when he does they're $15 for a pack of 5 blades. Is this normal/correct?

While I love the nostalgia that comes with wet shaving, I admittedly wanted my husband to switch to this method for nostalgic AND budget reasons.

$15 for a pack of 5 blades is NOT going to work with our budget as that's about what we're doing now with his Schick Hydro.

I really would like to find blades locally in addition to buying online.

So...does anyone else have trouble finding budget-friendly, quality blades locally?

Her husband tries to buy them at Walmart...I'd be inclined to check Walgreens. We live in Oklahoma, btw.

Some area stores will carry DE blades, and I've never seen them at that price anywhere I've spotted them locally. The only issue I've seen is your selection is pretty sparse, usually regulated to Wilkinson Swords or some store brand generic... both of which are generally... barely adequate for most people. As in, they'll do in a pinch for most of us, but we'll hate every stroke of them across our faces. lol

With the online availability so large, and inexpensive to buy them in lots of 100 at a time, I don't even bother looking locally anymore. $14 gets me 100 Personna labs, or $8 for 100 Astra's, etc., any one of those choices would last many of us a full years worth of shaves, if not more.

I've never tried Walmart, but from what I've read here they shouldn't be that expensive there. CVS and Walgreens tend to be on the higher end of the spectrum too, at over $6 or $7 a pack.
I've had luck at Dollar General, where a 5-pack of rebranded Dorco blades was a dollar. Not every likes Dorcos, but at that price it's worth a shot.
I also tend to check whatever mom and pop pharmacies I can find to see what they have. I found one this past weekend that had Wilkinson blades for $1.09, but the past 3 I'd checked before then didn't have any. It's a gamble, but that's part of the fun (for me at least). In all though, you'll probably have the best luck ordering them online.

I think the lady is a little bit confused. DE blades at Walmart are made by Wilkinson Sword and run $1.76 for 10, not $15 for 5. Walgreen's, Rite Aid etc generally carry house brand blade made by Personna and run $6-8 for 10, which is way too expensive. Family Dollar and Dollar General stores also carry their own brand at semi decent prices, but you're not likely to find much else locally so online is probably his best bet.

+1
wally world is not that expensive. i'd suggest you look for yourself. Walmart in TN is the same price as Walmart in IL (i just moved from TN) so im sure the Walmart in Oklahoma is the same as well, give or take few cents.

I think your neighbor is confusing true DE blades with an older 2 blade cartridge razor like TracII, Atra, Sensor, etc. where the blades CAN cost that much.

The Trac II, and Atra has excellent quality blades sold at Wal-Mart (Wilkinson Sword brand) that are 10 blades for about $3.54. Dollar General, and Family Dollar sell rebranded Dorco blades that are 10 for $2 (at Family Dollar), and 6 for $1.25 (Dollar General).

The genuine Gillette blades might be $15 for 10 blades, but most people indicate the Wilkinson Sword blades are just as good.

I have bought Wilkinson Swords (10 pack for $1.70-something) at the neighborhood Walmart in Moore OK (4th and Eastern)not too long ago. But like others have said, they aren't that great so maybe the internet is the best option.

Alrighty, thanks folks! My only concern with ordering online is the S&H being outrageous...but I'll give it a go on Amazon once the hubby tries out his sampler and decides on a blade.

Check out West Coast Shaving and Bullgoose Shaving as well. Blades don't weight all that much, so shipping should cost very little. They should easily fit in a small padded mailer, or a priority mail small flat rate box, so shipping should be about $5.
