What's new

Hard Steel

I recently bought a Japanese straight (5/8 wedge) and I've been working for over an hour with a Naniwa 1k to set the bevel, but it doesn't seem like I've even made a dent in it.
Should I go for a DMT, or just keep going?

Wedges are notoriously more difficult. I would suggest hitting the DMT since more and more laps on the 1K will only work to dish the stone more, making things even more difficult.

Another option is using tape, but that is another can of worms. :001_smile

I agree also that the DMTs are probably called for.

I use DMTs a lot, and hardly ever start on the 1K, no matter the grind. (DMT 220, 325, 600.)

The DMT will also cause more wear on the spine just be aware of that also. The naniwa 1k is already a fast hone to use and to set bevels, some blades just take more time.

Have you been doing circular strokes with a little pressure at first and then working into x patterns?

Good point!

When on the DMTs pay more attention to the rotation on your grip than you might on the later hones. Rotate the blade to keep as much pressure as possible off the spine. The spine should be barely touching the DMT, just enough to ensure proper angle. But, not enough to take serious metal off.
