Hair Tonic?

I never really understood what hair tonic was, or was supposed to do. The other day I came across some at a friend's, and he suggested I try it. I did, and I liked the smell but didn't really notice any other effects. Later on, at home, SWMBO commented on how soft my hair felt. I suppose it must be the tonic?
Does anyone here still use hair tonic? I'm intrigued and want to try some. Any suggestions? The stuff I tried was by a brand called Jack Dean, but it's not listed on their website.
Has anyone made their own hair tonic?

Chuck, I have and regularly use Pinaud's Eau de Portugal and Eau de Quinine--both are traditional hair tonics like the Jack Dean.

I see that you're in NYC. Head over to Pasteur's Pahrmacy in Manhattan (53 E 34th St (212) 683-3838 and 806 Lexington Ave (212) 838-2500) and you can pick up those, and plenty of other hair tonics as well!

I was told by a barber friend that it worked on dandruff. Tried it and the result was a dry scalp. I have a 80% full bottle of vitalis thats been hanging around for 3 years.

Since many years I use Hair Tonics and I love them. I use Pomade every day and wash it out with normal soap and then use Hair Tonic. Since I do that, I have no more problems with dandruffs. I use Seborin and Pinaud Eau de Quinine.

Thanks for the advice guys. Wingnut, although I try to avoid midtown like the plague, I'm actually heading into my company's Times Square office this afternoon, so I'll be in the area. I'll have to shoot down a few blocks and check out Pasteur's.

Pour 1 cup of apple cider vinegar into a canning jar. Squeeze 10 drops of tea tree oil into jar. Shake jar for 15 seconds to thoroughly mix ingredients. Pour tonic into the palm of your hand. Massage into the scalp using a circular motion.
