Hair Tonic

Which one do you use and why? Which one has the worst scent and the which one has the best scent? I'm new to hair tonic and thought I'd throw out some very broad questions to get discussion going, thank you.

I've only used Vitalis. I can say that I had been unhappy all of my life with hair products and finding the right one. I wish I had found this earlier.

Not tonic, but I'm hooked on Brylcreem, used it in the 60's as a boy and re discovered as of late and love it again!

+1 on the Brylcreem. I'm very new to this but I tried Pinaud Eau de Quinine and Jeris with Oil. I had been using pomade more but wanted something oil based as I find that dandruff is far less or a non-issue using non-alcohol based products. But daily pomade is a bit over the top for me so that's more for "special occasions". The Jeris with Oil didn't do enough for me in terms of control. I find the Brylcreem provides enough control yet hair is soft. I do want to try Vitalis (though not partial to the scent) and possibly Tres Flores (even less partial to that scent).

I guess it begs the question - what do you want out of it?

I use the Clubman Eau de Quinine and Portugal for my beard. I find that the best things are that it keeps the hair soft and "clean looking." The Portugal scent is slightly medicinal and floral while the Quinine has a strong citrus and alcohol scent. Neither of them last very long in terms of scent.

I tried Brylcreem as a kid and thought it was really greasy. Is it?

Tonic for your beard...now we're talking.

I've been using the Dollar General knock off of Vitalis. I'm not sure why. It's what I've got and I just don't feel right about pouring down the drain is probably the best answer.

Booster's Sage is my favorite from a scent and performance standpoint. No idea why it performs so well for me, given the few ingredients that comprise it, but I'll take it.

So I'm trying to make my grooming habits a bit more manly. I've been using the Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Anti Frizz serum on my hair for several years now. It keeps my hair soft, shiny, and cuts down on the poofiness and the whispiness. I like it but its got a bit of a girly smell to it....espcially now that I know my girlfriend uses the same thing! So I ask, will a hair tonic (like Eau de Quinine) do the same thing for me that the anti frizz serum does? I'm not looking for something to make my hair sticky or overly greasy....

Jeris is a hit! It works well, not heavy at all and washes out no problem.

Brylcreem or Groom and Clean?

the best thing you can do for your beard is washing it with a solution of water and (real) coconut oil, makes it super healthy and strong.

Thanks man for the advice. I recently trimmed the beard pretty close to gear up for a month-long beard growing for a charity cause but it does not take long before I look like Hillbilly Jim. I know this may be a ridiculous question but...is that the same coconut oil that movie theaters use for the popcorn? Are there hygienic use and food prep variances?

Suave Groom & Clean is a really good hair dressing that keeps down the frizz, gives some shine and hold, but isn't greasy or gloppy. Rub a little bit into damp hair and comb through. If you want less of a "wet" look, when your hair dries, brush out and re-comb.

I also use Lucky Tiger, and it's a little "wetter" overall. It also has a more prominent scent that lasts throughout the day.

I use Floid Tonic for White Hair. I don't know why except that I got about 4 bottles very cheap from a foreign site and I was curious about it. I had never used a true "hair tonic" before. I had only ever used stuff like Brylcreem, hair gel, pomade, etc. I use in the evenings. I use a lot of pomade during the day, so I feel like it helps thin out the product in my hair before I go to bed and then maybe it washes out better when I take a shower in the morning. I'm sure it's good for my scalp and my hair is always very shiney after I put it in an brush it back with my military brush.... but I don't use it for styling at all. I have a few grey hairs, but I'm far from white. I got it and use it out of curiosity mostly and I will reuse the 400 ml glass bottles for aftershave/witch hazel that come in cheap plastic bottles. It has kind of a pleasant floral smell to it and I would say it's relatively strong. I think it would clash with a cologne just a bit if you wore the two at the same time. I've gone through one bottle already and I'm about done with the second one. I don't really know if it does anything for me since I never had any trouble with dandruff or flakey, dry scalp in the past.... so I don't know if I'll get anymore again down the road.

I think the Jeris is drying my hair out! I've been using it for a few days in a row now and my hair is really dry. Anyone else experience this using Jeris? Maybe Brylcreem or Groom & Clean to remedy the situation.
