Hail the wedge

After a false start at straight shaving a few months ago I decided that I need to give it another go. I did some research on straight razors and came to the conclusion that seeings as I like heavy and aggressive DE's then I should try and get something similar in a straight. After talking to Luc, I decided to e-mail gugi and see if he had a wedge that he was willing to part with. After some very swift negotiations (gugi: I'd like to get $x for the razor. me:I'll take it), I became the owner of a very solid and extremely well honed wedge blade.
I waited until Saturday early afternoon so I'd have a fraction more growth. I lathered up and went to work with the wedge. Being an inexperienced straight shaver (this was probably straight shave attempt 7 or 8 and my first in many months) I did one WTG pass and a little bit of XTG and ATG where I felt comfortable doing so. Now the result was far from DFS and further from BBS but I got a shave that I would have been happy to leave the house with and even go to work with. It's probably the same quality as a single pass with a DE. I'm actually realy happy with that and I'm looking forward to having another straight shave tomorrow. It seems that I might have found that solid, heavy bladed straights work for me. I'm really looking forward to getting my restored W&B from Ambrose and seeing how I go with a non wedge large blade. It makes sense that straights, like DE's are very different and you need to find one that works for you.

All of this, no pictures? John, show us the beast!

Nice :thumbup1:, glad you found your preference in straights By the way your W&B is a half hollow, which Ive found to be a nice balance, and still on the hefty side. I would be interested in your thoughts once you get it in your hands, and the strop :biggrin1:

I recently picked up a couple of straight razors at antique malls in Snohomish, WA - one is a full hollow ground (Bismarck 406) and the other a Salamander Wedge (love the logo on that one, by the way). Once I clean them up and hone and strop them to shave ready, I will find out which type of grind is best for me. It certainly makes sense that such matters would be a user preference thing.

The Wedge is in many ways idiot proof (I don't mean to insult you, I mean merely to praise the efficiency of the design). I don't like to push for BBS with my Wapi, because it starts to carve up my face. However, when it comes to just chopping beard away, its fantastic. It may not be BBS, but, it will be even across your whole face, and give you that designer stubble look (think Alexei Sale, or that guy from the transporter).

I find my face is too sensitive to go any further than 5 o clock shadow closeness with a wedge blade. I use a hollower grind for anything closer. What have you found?

This must be one of the most common recurring discoveries by the straight shavers in training. :tongue_sm Let me just say that you like the wedges today because they seem to be smoother and easier to control and use and better at cutting your coarse beard than hollows, but as you will get better with hand-eye coordination, angles and momentum, you will make another astonishing discovery - hollow ground razors are great, possibly the best invention after sliced bread. Been there, seen that, discussed that (many times). :001_rolle

I had shave #2 with the wedge today. I changed the angle a little and ended up with a very close shave. Probably a little too close. The aftershave splash at the end gave a heck of a sting. Certainly no Alexi Sayle stubble left on my face. It probably took about 25 mins but I did have an excited Pug puppy jumping up on me whilst I was trying to shave. Probably not a great idea when you've got a very sharp straight pressed against your neck.
I'm going to shave with it again tomorrow moring. It'll be my first ever straight shave for work. I would certainly be happy to go to work on the shave I had today.

Sounds like you're another convert!

I lock the bathroom door when I'm using a straght (and warn Mrs Pumpkin)...it's definitely a good idea to not have any distractions!!! :scared:

The DE's got left in the rack again this morning. Straight shave #3 and off to work. I would rate it as equivalent to a DE single pass which I'm very happy with. I imagine it'll take me a while to get used to some of the angles but seeing as I'm on a roll I may as well stick with it for a while.

Good work John! It will get closer with experience. I thought I would always have a scruff on the throat at one stage but now, BBS!
