Had my first straight razor shave from a Turkish barber

I got married a few weeks ago and my dad thought it would be a nice gesture to get his barber (he gets his hair cut every week and goes to the barber twice for shaves.

Anyway neither my dad or the barber knew I shave with a DE etc... and I just let them know it was my first straight razor shave.

I had a few days growth and to be honest it was not a very good experience shave wise. I have no idea if this is because the barber was operating outside his barber shop or whether he is just not very good.

For a start off there was no prep at all, not even water on my face or a hot towel. My face was dry, he mixed up some lather using some turkish shave soap or cream and hot water then applied to my face. He then started to shave me with a shavette (fresh blade for every customer). He soon discovered I have a pretty tough beard. He had to keep going at it but he got a pretty close shave on my face but left my neck with stubble I could feel. He said you should not go against the grain on the neck (not that I asked him to).

He then finished off with an alchohol based aftershave which burnt (I tend to avoid them personally), and then did the whole Turkish thing to get rid of hairs in the ears and trimmed my nose hairs etc...

Overall I think I had high expectations, and I am sure been out of his comfort zone changed his methods somewhat. In the end my face was slightly sore in places, but I could not stand the stubble on my neck, hence why I went back to my own room, used a hot towel on my neck, whipped up a nice lather, then reduced it with my DE.

I don't think I've ever heard reports of a good barber shave by anyone here at B&B.

I think we all are better at shaving our own faces then the "pros" these days.

+1 My last Barber shave had several nicks and was stubble by 4:00 p.m. However, I want one by those women barbers. I bet I'll still have stubble by evening but I'll feel a lot better about it.

I got a couple of shaves in Morocco.
They weren't the closest or the most amazing shaves but the whole experience was worth it.
Soap smelt like arko and the old boy had the shakes something fierce.
Still, each shave was about €2

It's like bringing home the McRib sandiwich to a guy with a $50,000 custom smoking trailer in the backyard and trophies for best of show on the mantle.
