Guys with thick beards, what grind do you use?

You guys with mega thick beards, what grind do you use? Might I get better feel and control with a quarter hollow? I am interested in trying different grinds to see what feels nice. Let's go to the end of the line, what about a wedge? I do know where I can get one NOS without giving away my firstborn.

Grinds come down to preference, IMO, and all grinds can give you a great shave if you practice with them. I love full hollows and I have a thick beard that is stiff, but I like the flex of hollows better in tight areas.

I would describe my beard as thick but not mega thick. My best shaves seem to come from large (7/8" & 8/8") half hollow blades.

You can pick up a really nice brand new big Revisor for a great price (For what you get).

Example below is one of my best shavers. Although I got mine 2nd hand off the B/S/T.

+1

I like half/full hollow 6/8-7/8...

All of them, from full wedges to extra hollow ground.

I have an average beard I suppose, but my hair is wiry, curly and I use from a full wedge to a full hollow all successfully. Different in feel and angles a bit, but they will all give you a good shave, if they are properly honed and stropped.

Just curious why NOS? I have some that are true NOS, never been honed, but I would suggest something off the B/S/T. If you are worried about sanitation, just boil up a pot of water and dip the blade in, use Barbacide, or even an alcohol bath for the blade. Before I send a razor to anyone, I sanitize it.

Unfortunately, you won't really know your preference until you try different grinds. Perhaps, that is why we have so many razors. :sneaky2:

+2 here...I initially started with a near wedge and got better shaves than hollows, but as my technique improved, the playing field was leveled to the point that it no longer matter. Size will play a role and for each person that is different.

Just curious why NOS?

I just happened to find one at the superior shave, and in my limited looking in the BST I have not seen many wedges or anything other than a full hollow for that matter. Then again too I did not try very hard.

I am not afraid of cleaning used razors, I have two. Boiling water and then alcohol.

I have a Red Imp, wedge, I bought from The Superior Shave. You will get a great edge from them.

Good, I was just a bit confused- not an uncommon state of affairs. :001_smile

Folks asking for NOS razors sometimes do not realize they may well need honing, or have some fear of used razors. NOSs also usually cost more than a used razor in good shape, and do not necessarily deliver much more in the way of shave quality.

Superior Shave has been a very good vendor in my two dealings with them. Accommodating and reliable. Products have been just as described and quite fairly priced.

You might also try posting in the WTB (wanted to buy) section of the B/S/T when you finally decide what you want. You are likely to get some offers. I would bet many of the folks around here are sitting on a few quarter hollows, wedges or near wedges!

Good luck with your search and decision.

To be honest with you, I have a better idea. I am gonna make one. I already have everything to include the PID controlled electric furnace. I already have an idea in my head. Doing this I can use the hardware I want and get exactly what I am looking for. Well... Everything short of a perfect grind. I can arrange the logistics but let's see how well I can hollow grind. I am pretty much a flat platen stock removal guy. Have to practice on other stuff before I tear into some expensive stuff. I just got done cutting a contact wheel on the lathe this morning.
