...the Sensor Excel?!
I've been patiently practicing with my Merkur 38C, and though I have a ways to go I have come a long way toward being able to use it without irritation (specifically on the left side of my throat, where my growth pattern is a morass and the skin burns if I even look at it too intently or from the wrong angle).
But I was at the grocery store the other day and spotted the Sensor Excel handle on sale for $7. I instantly recalled a day I hadn't thought about in 12 years, my first experience of shaving nirvana--the day I was out of disposable-handle Bic razors and my college roommate let me borrow his Sensor. It was like it had been made for my face; I could do no wrong with this razor. Effortless BBS and my skin felt somehow healthier, like the razor had given me the opposite of razor burn. Alas, as a poor college student I assumed the cartridges must have been priced several times higher than my default Bics and did not get my own Sensor. After graduating and getting a real job I went Mach 3, never imagining that the older technology cartridge could be the superior shave for me, despite the years of Mach 3 irritation that eventually led me through the Panasonic desert and finally to the DE.
I bought the Sensor the other night and shaved with it. It was everything I remembered, only much moreso because I lathered with Proraso green tub instead of canned goo and finished with C&E Nomad ASB instead of nothing. My last two shaves with the Sensor have been without question the best I have ever had.
Honestly, the DE may someday match the Sensor experience for me, but it will never exceed it. The coolness factor and low blade cost of DE make me want to hone my technique such that it approaches the Sensor. But Sensor carts can be had for a buck apiece on Amazon, and the shaves are just that good that I'm tempted to thumb my nose at the DE's coolness factor, order a nicer metal Sensor handle and never look back.
Decisions, decisions!
