What's new

Great new addition to my arsenal...

...the Sensor Excel?!

I've been patiently practicing with my Merkur 38C, and though I have a ways to go I have come a long way toward being able to use it without irritation (specifically on the left side of my throat, where my growth pattern is a morass and the skin burns if I even look at it too intently or from the wrong angle).

But I was at the grocery store the other day and spotted the Sensor Excel handle on sale for $7. I instantly recalled a day I hadn't thought about in 12 years, my first experience of shaving nirvana--the day I was out of disposable-handle Bic razors and my college roommate let me borrow his Sensor. It was like it had been made for my face; I could do no wrong with this razor. Effortless BBS and my skin felt somehow healthier, like the razor had given me the opposite of razor burn. Alas, as a poor college student I assumed the cartridges must have been priced several times higher than my default Bics and did not get my own Sensor. After graduating and getting a real job I went Mach 3, never imagining that the older technology cartridge could be the superior shave for me, despite the years of Mach 3 irritation that eventually led me through the Panasonic desert and finally to the DE.

I bought the Sensor the other night and shaved with it. It was everything I remembered, only much moreso because I lathered with Proraso green tub instead of canned goo and finished with C&E Nomad ASB instead of nothing. My last two shaves with the Sensor have been without question the best I have ever had.

Honestly, the DE may someday match the Sensor experience for me, but it will never exceed it. The coolness factor and low blade cost of DE make me want to hone my technique such that it approaches the Sensor. But Sensor carts can be had for a buck apiece on Amazon, and the shaves are just that good that I'm tempted to thumb my nose at the DE's coolness factor, order a nicer metal Sensor handle and never look back.

Decisions, decisions!

You could compare safety razors to cars, a new car drives great and all, but if you ever had a mint 49 chevy, or a 1970 Gto, its a drive with style, man.

For every face there is the perfect combo.
Sounds like you have found yours. Enjoy.....

Mine is either a 1946 Milord or 1956 Diplomat or a 195 Heavy with an Astra Platinum blade.

A more significant issue than DE or Cart is the prep.
A good soap / cream and a brush makes a real difference.

If I had to choose to either shave with a good quality soap and brush and a cart razor OR a good DE, blade and canned goo, I'd have to choose the cart combo.

Fortunately, none of us have to make that choice, and I can enjoy my straights and my DE's and my Injectors all with quality soap / cream products.

No doubt you can too.

I've said it before. I never left cartridge razors because of bad shaves. I joined wet shaving because to me it just oozes manliness. I love the nostalgia of wetshaving. The whole process of it is just great. I always got a great shave from cartridge razors, that was never the problem

I bought my first Gillette Sensor in 1990, the year it hit the market. I was tired of ripping stubble out of my face with a Norelco electric. I think the Atra and Sensor are the best pivoting blade cart razors. I still use an Atra on occasion, because I won the handle in an Ebay lot of razors, and I got 4 of the 10 packs of store brand personna carts for $4.39 each at Rite Aid. I wish I could find Sensor carts cheaply. If I could, I'd use it more often, just for nostalgia.
The Sensor gave great shaves, but I just can't see $20.00 for 10 carts.
Not when I get 100 Derby blades for $10.00, or 100 Feather blades for $35.00.
If anyone knows where I could get ASR/Personna made carts for the Sensor, please do PM me, because I like the ASR Atra carts.
I gave away my Schick Quattro, and I still have the original cart that came with my Fusion. I still have about 6 new M3 carts, but I like the Sensor better. I never liked the limp-wristed pivot action of the M3/Fusion.

If I could only find another deal on ASR injector blades like CVS had a few months ago(11 blades for $2.50) I'd be in hog heaven.

I don't have to hurry when I shave, because I shave at night during the week. I don't trust my own hands to use a sharp blade on my face and neck at 6:00AM.

I am in the same boat. I really like DE shaving and trying different razors and blades. However, I get great shaves from sensors and it takes much less time. I think a good mix of the two is where I can find shaving zen.

Since I started posting on B&B again this week I've been trying the DE out again. However for the last eight months I've been shaving with an assortment of cartridge razors. Combined with good lather and a nice aftershave they work great. The only reason I'm using the DE right now is to try and save money on cartridges so I can buy expensive soap and aftershave instead.

Good DE shave this morning. I do think some more practice can get me to where I get with the Sensor in terms of shave quality. The nice thing is I don't have to choose only one and leave the other behind. I can use the Sensor when I'm in a bit more of a hurry, or traveling, or if I just feel like it, and use DE when I want as well.

Update:

I've found the "right" DE razor for me--the Edwin Jagger DE89. I actually enjoy shaving with this razor even more than with the Sensor. So the EJ will be my daily shaver and I will hold on to the Sensor for when I travel, or if I ever just feel like using it.
