Great Grandfathers Razor HELP

I need a little help. I am a DE shaver but My Great Grandfather Passed away and I was given his Straight. I Know nothing about straights. It does have a chip in the blade to me not very big but what do I know. Where is a good place to have this fixed or can I do this myself. Just means a lot to me to have it done because I think a family member was the one who chipped it. Thank you, Bryan

Man, I love family heirloom razors...

As for restoring it, you need to post pictures of the razor... Depending on how big the chip is, how bad the rust is (or if there is rust) that will dictate it's fixability... Get some pictures up and you'll get a bounty of helpful responses.

Cheers,
Jeremy

Ok, Here are a few.

Oh Dear God, that's a fantastic razor... And it looks to be in great condition... Send that razor to a reputable honemaster and it'll give you some fantastic shaves. Those chips look very manageable.

Amazing find, especially from family!

:001_tt1::001_tt1::001_tt1::001_tt1::clap::clap: Wow this is an absolute beauty, in a nut shell thats in almost pristine condition!! Yes its got a chip but nothing that cant be sorted out, the rest is fantastic!
Where are you based?

This is why men should shave like men - you can't pass down your Gillette fusion to your great grandkids, by that time they'll probably have The Gillette: Graham's number. :biggrin1:

Thank you, I am in Indiana. It is in really good shape. I just dont know enough about them to know if it repairable

Excellent Razor of great quality. Be sure to use a qualified professional to get it to 100% as this is one of the most valuable razors on the market. A little research and you'll find many buyers willing to pay top dollar for such an example.

Thank you all. I will be looking for a rep. person to fix this. Just dont know who yet, lol.

I would ask Lynn Abrams over at Straight Razor Place, or maybe Larry Andro, a fellow B&B member, if they could restore for you. Those are the two most notable people that first come to mind for me. At least named people I would trust with that kind of heirloom.

What size blade is it? it looks like a 3/8?, original purpose is for trimming after a haircut, so it is made small and manuverable. But unfortunatly will end up very small after honing out that chip.

It looks more like a 4/8 to me and getting rid of those chips aren't going to take much more off it.

What a beautiful razor and it's an heirloom. There is no better.

Lovely razor & the fact that it's a herlioom is just :001_wub:

Since you are in America I can name a few American honemeisters I've personally tried & I wouldn't hesitate to trust a heirloom of my own to any of them!

Ken Rupalski (ruprazor.com)
Bob Keyes (Bobsrazors.com)
Lynn Abrams ( straightrazordesigns.com)
Larry Andro (whippeddogstraights.com)

Good luck!

Thank you all for your help. I will be getting this fixed ASAP. I will post the pics after it is finished
