What's new

Grandfathers shave bag found.

So my mother was cleaning out the attic and found my grandfather's razor bag. A few gems were found. The straight razor has some rust as you can see but I put some CLR on it and a lot came off. The Rolls Razor sharpener is not something I've ever seen. But seems to work well although I don't have anything to try with it. It moves back and forth easily and is pretty neat. I'll never use them but pretty cool to find them stuff over 20 years later after he passed. May he rest in peace.

Anybody have any insight on these items? Especially the small toothpick looking things. No idea on those.

I can't read what the razor label says as of yet, needs more cleaning, but from the pictures the hone for a single edge razor of some sort, maybe a injector? Not sure as I've never seen them in person. Are you saying that the blade is what's in there? I haven't messed with it, but if that's the case I wonder if you can find handles for them. Interesting.

The rust on the razor looks like cell rot from the scales. I know it's grampa's razor, which is incredible, but the scales should be replaced immediately to avoid further blade deformation. If u get a pair in horn or micartA/g10 you won't have to worry about cell rot an the material should look somewhat original. Congrats on the find! Use the stuff in good health!

Congrats on the find! Have you thought about getting the straight restored and touched up, both to preserve it and to maybe give it a try at using it?

the blade is in the rolls. the hone is for the straight razor, i would guess it is a finishing hone. they are for maintaining a shave ready straight not for repairs or dull razors.

Very cool. If you are new to straights and are ever interested in shaving with that one, I'll hone it for free, you just pay the shipping costs.

I would think if it was cell rot, the colorations would be reversed. It looks like the scales protected the razor from humidity, as everything that was covered is rust free and what was exposed is rusted.

+1
It doesn't look the same as any examples I have seen posted elsewhere as cell rot. Which is a good thing, it means that those scales could very well be salvagable and safe to reuse.

Nothing like shaving with your grandfather's razor! If you feel up to the task of shaving with it, you should have someone restore it and put a shave-ready edge on it, possibly replacing the scales as well. It would be helpful to have some close-up pictures of the sharpening stone, if possible. Beneath the deep black (oil encrustation?), it hints at being much lighter in color in places. From the dimensions, depth, and surface granularity as shown, I'm going to go way, way out on a limb and guess that it's a Washita (maybe a lily white).

That is very cool. I wish I had even one razor from my grandfather. I remember seeing nice Gillette razors in his lavatory areas.
