Gourmet Meals on the Grill

Hey guys, my wife asked me to make her a gourmet meal for her birthday since I haven't made one for a while. I was thinking beef wellington, but with 100+ temps I'm not real keen on firing up our gas oven. So, what are some gourmet meal I can make on the grill? Thanks!

"Gourmet" is a bit of a relative term... there are several thousand ways you can make some pretty fancy items on a grill outdoors... depends on what sorts of things you consider "gourmet".

Do you have any preference for a type of cuisine? (French, Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, German, etc.)? Or something that you simply do not like?

I would stay away from the asian varieties...she has to really have a hankering for it.

All right, and you wrote earlier that it has to be more than a marinade and grilling...

One thing that I've been doing lately is pizza on the BBQ. I got a cast iron plate that goes in the oven but on the barbie it's 10 times better. Pizza could be "gourmet", it depends how far you take it (make the dough, make the sauce, toppings).

I do most of my meats for my tacos on the grill also but you are looking for something more. Mmm, Steven Raichlen was cooking seafood such as Clams on the grill which I thought was interesting. In the end, you can pretty much do anything on there as it's a heat source. When it goes gourmet, it could be a lobster instead of a steak.

I like the pizza on the grill idea. Where do I get one of these cast iron plates?

I did a stuffed pork loin on a grill, used it as a slow cook oven, put the roasting pan on it and closed the lid..

I made a stuffing from pumpernickle bread, onions, apple chunks, craisons, and some sage, with the usual salt pepper spicing. You can just slice open the loin, or get really fancy and butterfly it or fillet it open, then it's stuff it, or spread the stuffing and roll it back together, tie it off, into the pan with some stock, and onto the grill.

Add grilled veggies for a side.

Also a great idea! I'm pretty open so just keep throwing them out there. Let's call this a brainstorming session

You could use a cast iron pan too, it would be a bit smaller. The plate I got it as a gift from a camping gear store.

A couple meals I have done in the past, that are not ordinary meat and potatoes. I vote for skewers. Easy to make and make an excellent presentation and are sooooooo tasty.

this was taken directly from here, via grilling24x7's website "Grilled Turkish Chicken with Grilled Chapati"

everything was done exactly as he said and cooked exactly as he said and turned out FANTASTIC. wife even said "this one's a keeper"

i grilled some red pepper as a side with some onion, i was very very skeptical about the sauce and only put a tiny bit on my bread/chicken, but after the 1st bite, i went and scooped a bunch more on it. it was very tasty, doesn't look that great, but sure is good.

all done on the weber charcoal.

it was surprisingly easy to make everything, but it was oh so impressive.

Grilled Banana's with some rum and brown sugar (lots of recipies online) or grilled pineapple make great desserts.

You can pick up a pizza stone almost anywhere (walmart, target etc), but it needs to be seasoned a few times before I'd try a birthday pizza on it.

As for pizza...lots of gourmet varieties. Grilled chicken with BBQ sauce instead of pizza sauce. Chicken with alfredo sauce (not my fav, but wife likes it) or whatever she likes can be used for toppings.

make the crust from scratch, make the sauce, have some fun with it...pizza is always good on the grill.

Grilled Ahi tuna, sticky rice with ginger, grilled asparagus (salt, pepper, olive oil). Dessert is a summer standard, fresh peaches and vanilla bean ice cream. Make the cream yourself. Or, you could make a glaze with the peaches and a nice ice wine reduced in a pan.
