What's new

Got to sample two more Scotches tonight!

Wife's Christmas party tonight, happily held at a bar and restaurant with a nice selection of Scotches. I started with a glass of Glenfiddich 12. Nice Speyside malt. Very similar to the Glenlivet 12, but different enough to be interesting. I would not buy a bottle of either just yet.

My second glass was of a Scotch I would not hesitate to buy. Talisker 10. What a nice Scotch! A mellow, moderately peaty Island Scotch. More complex than the Speyside malts. A Scotch whose scent you can really enjoy between sips. It seems to be a nice compromise between the very peaty Islay malts and the mild Speyside offerings.

The tastings continue...

You can't go wrong with Glenfiddich - my first visit to a whisky specialist shop was on a trip to another city and I made it with 15 minutes to spare before closing time. I was slightly overwhelmed by the sheer range available in the time I had and I ended up buying the Glenfiddich as a safety buy! In fact Glenfiddich is the greatest selling SMW in the world, although Glenmorangie is the greatest selling SMW in Scotland. The Talisker comes from Skye and is a great drop of whisky, an easy alternative to Islay's heavily peated whiskies.

Talisker 10 is pretty good. Peppery.

I got some Talisker Distillers Edition too, it's also good. Light peat, and sort of a licorice taste.

Glenfiddich 12 is ok...much better than Glenlivet IMO which I really don't care for.
