Good SE for noob

Gem Pushbutton. This was my first SE razor. It gives a great shave, easy to maneuver, and is fairly mild for a SE

Toothpick

Needs milk and a bidet!
i have a GEM 1912 it was the first SE i used. LOVE IT. gives me better shaves than my current DE razors...although the Slim with a Gillette black blade is stellar.
I have also have used a GEM G-Bar which was fantastic!

I have to second the G-Bar. Built like a brick, gives a nice shave, and not to hard on the eyes. Great all around razor.

If they don't rust out on you during the shave, then yes. Mainly depends on your water quality. I didn't find them to be worth the extra effort but many do.

All I use are Treet blades. A little effort to keep clean and dry, but the sharpness and smoothness of the shave these blades give is pretty awesome.

+1 on the bush button GEM.

You should be able to get one delivered to you for under $10.

They are always low priced and they are a very respectable SE razor.

That way you can try one without spending a lot of $$$ and if you like using a SE you can move on and get the "whole set" :001_smile

Are the treet brand blades any good?

Yes, but if you get the carbon ones take care as they will rust. Remove them from the razor after each shave, pat them dry, and store them where moisture will not start them rusting on you. You can get stainless treet blades so take a good look at them at the store before buying. The stainless ones will say "stainless" on them (obviously) and the carbon steel ones will say 009 RD on them which is the blade thickness.

I find that the best blades (for me anyway) are the PTFE coated stainless GEM blades that are available at medical and lab supply houses in 100 count boxes.

The push button was my first SE also, very easy to use and smooth, felt quite a bit different for me from the DE. Since then, picked up G-Bar, Bullet Tip, OCMM, Clog Pruf, 1912 - can't go wrong with any of them. The only one that didn't rank up there with the others (for me at least) is the Featherweight. Good luck.

What is that razor in the middle?

I wondered how long it would take before someone commented on that razor. I've been posting that pic for some time now and no one has noticed how "odd" the middle razor really is

Rhodes Kriss Kross. Uses a proprietary SE blade. Typically found with the stropping device.

I've never understood recommending "noobs" the featherweight...not one even on my top 5 SEs. I didn't get a great shave with mine and it's quite different in weight, feel and lid opening method. Not a great learning razor. I may also be "snooty," but I find the featherweight just feels cheap...but I must own I've only tried it once.

I have come, more and more, to love the Micromatics. I just bought a beautiful Gold MMOC and have tried it twice with CVS blades. I expected to like it more than the closed comb/safety bar MM but I didn't. I still see my Clog Pruf as better for me. So, I recommend the Clog Pruf for newbies. It's not too aggressive to fear, gives great shaves, they're easily found and inexpensive in general.

I, like most, love the 1912s and I recommend any make of 1912 (EverReady, Star, Gem). They only one that's different/better IMO is the Gem 1912 Damaskeene. I don't suggest it for a first SE...better get comfortable with the basic 1912s...but if you like the 1912s, you'll want a Dam.
