Going to try this again

I had sold off my Japanese style Feather SS because not only could I not get used to it, but I cut my face every single time I used it. I had been "Hmming" and "Haawing" about getting a folding style feather and trying again...but I would be mad at myself for dropping that kind of coin only to resell it.

So, after reading up on shavettes, I decided I liked the blue color dovo, but it looked cheap. I did not like the look of the Parker. So - I ordered a Sanguine off of the that electronic auction place...and spent a whopping $13 shipped. It'll take my DE blades snapped in half as well. So I figured that would be an easier way to slowly try this again. I know I am not interested in stropping and honing at this time, but I will see if I can work towards a feather SS again as a goal, instead of diving in head face first.

Here's what it will look like. It's 5.5 inches in length, but cannot seem to find the weight. It's also made of steel.

Anyhow, I 'll report back when it shows up and how I make out. I didn't ever do too bad with the feathers, but I always seemed to manage to slice my chin thanks to moving the blade sideways across my face while not paying attention. Perhaps my DE blades will be a bit more forgiving than the feather. At least if it doesn't work out, I won't feel so bad in pif-ing this one.

Looks pretty nice to me :). Maybe corking the blade the first few times might drop down the intensity of the blade enough to allow the rookie mistakes without cutting

I liked my shavette when I had it, and I feel it's a great way to dip a toe into the straight shaving waters.

Maybe the razors you were using on that SS were too aggressive, there are different types, also there are KAI and Dorco blades... If you decide to give the Feathers another go..
The shavette looks nice.

That's a nice looking shavette. I believe that the problem that you're experiencing will resolve itself with practice and going much lighter on the pressure in that area. Pressure is one of the main causes of nicks and cuts with any straight. Just allow your technique to develop and after some time the problems will take care of themselves.

I started off with the KAI pinks which were superb. I was not a fan of the pro guard at all.

Received my Sanguine in the post this afternoon. I'll have to wait until tomorrow to try it out, but so far it feels nice in the hand. The metal folding scales add a bit more weight than the non folding feather I had previously, and also help stabilize the grip a lot more (for me anyhow.)

I'll report back tomorrow after I have a chance to take it for a test drive.

Interesting that you find the Sanguine lighter than the non-folding Feather, because I would say the opposite! I had a Sanguine as my first shavette, and found it too light, whereas the Feather I find more weighty and better balanced. With that said though, I was able to get good shaves with the sanguine before passing it on and moving to a Parker, then Feather and Kais. Good luck with it, as was said above, no pressure!

Well it went pretty good, considering I was shaving in the shower. No damage to my face and results were DFS. I'll try again in 2 days except with proper prep, more light and a mirror/sink.

I got moves like Jagger
Shaving in the shower, eh? Nothing says "good grip" like wet hands :biggrin1:
You're a much braver man than I..... More skilled too I might add. My shavette gave me loads of love bites.

The scary part was after I was done shaving, I turned away from the shower mirror to rinse my face and the suction cups came loose. The mirror has a little built in "cupholder" where I had my razor and everything fell. Nothing broke, but the blade nicked my toe. No bloodshed...so I still consider it all in all- a success. The grip was a bit of a challenge...something I should have put a little more thought into. The one thing I did find a bit difficult was that when I was shaving ATG, I could not tell if it was the blade touching my skin or the outside of the razor...kind of like a lip where the blade holder sits. That's one thing I liked about the feather. I should just bite the bullet and order the folding SS already...but I want to make sure I am ready.
