Going To Try Open Comb NEW

I really like my Gillette Tech razors but I wanted to try something a bit more aggressive. I like the style of the 2 & 3 piece razors so after reading more I decided I wanted to get a Gillette NEW short & long comb razor to try out.

This is what I got in and cleaned up yesterday.

This is a 1930's Thin Handle Short Comb NEW. I'm pretty sure it's nickel not chromium since the finish is similar to that of my Techs and I think chromium is suppose to be more blue?
I really like this razor it's in really good shape and I can't wait to use it.

This one is a 1934 Red & Black Gold Long Comb NEW.
I didn't get this off ebay and I got it at a pretty good price. It has some white scum/limescale on it that cleaned right off with scrubbing bubbles. It has some light scratches on the cap & base of the handle but all of the gold seems to be there. This is my first gold Gillette, did they have a lacquer clear coat over the gold? On the bottom corner of the top of the cap there is a small section that looks like the shine is worn off but still gold? There is no copper showing. All in all it's looks pretty good & shiny to me.

Overall I'm pretty excited to try out the Short Comb but I'm not 100% sure if I really like Gold colored Gillettes. I may toss that one up on ebay and try to find a nice Long Comb in nickel to replace it.

Very nice. The common bar handle is probably my favorite Gillette razor handle. I find the New short OC to be a middle of the road shaver though with the common bar handle for some reason. I much prefer the New short OC head on my Big Boy Chromium Deluxe which is a much heavier and longer handle. Personally, I enjoy better shaves with the New long OC head.... as well as the New Improved head when it comes to vintage Gillette OC's. I, too, do not care for the gold toned razors.

I love the new long combs. Short combs are OK, but they don't shave quite like the long combs. I put a gillette black 7 o'clock in it, and it shaves better for me than anything else I've tried. In fact, I just sent one out for replating to keep it protected and shine it up.

Two very snazzy lookin' razors you grabbed there.
If you really do decide to give up the gold-tone one, shoot me a p.m. with a price and maybe we can make it disappear for you:001_smile

I was thinking the same thing but he said it first. Beauty razors!

Thanks guys. I'd love to get myself a Big Boy Chromium Deluxe!

I know it's going to be tricky to get a Nickel/Chromium New in Long Comb..

Rob your razor is what my wife calls "loved" :biggrin1:

Really beautiful razors sir! I've got a couple of long comb and one short comb New. I love how the long comb shaves, but I currently really digging how the short comb shaves - it's so smooth. That may totally have to do with my current blade choice of the Silver Blue, but man - what a razor! Thanks for sharing.

Very nice razors. I really like the red and black set. I picked one up off of EBay a while back and it's one of my favorites. I often pair it with my Weber bulldog and it offers a great shave.

I tried the short comb last night with a Gillette Silver Blue blade in it and I was surprised on how great it was :biggrin1:
Just a bit more aggressive then my Techs and exactly what I wanted!

I noticed that the difference in the long vs short comb isn't just the length of the teeth. There appears to be a design difference where the cap meets the base right, I'm thinking this has more to do with how each shave then the actual length of the comb?

Notice on the short comb there is a notched space on the base in each of the four corners so that the cap sits flush with the base above the teeth. While on the long comb there is no notches in the base so that you get a skinny slot above the teeth from the tabs in the cap.

The long-comb NEW is a nice razor. It shaves well for me until the last pass against the grain. After a while of use my beard changed somehow and the razor wasn't aggressive enough for that last pass. It got to where I had nicks and irritation galore on my neck when I was done. I switched it up to a more aggressive razor (I am switching between a black $1.75 plastic DE from Best Shave and a Gillette Red-Tip) and am getting less irritation from it. Shimming the NEW helped some but lately I still get a more comfortable last pass from the other razors mentioned. However, the build quality of the NEW is first rate and other than the last pass it is a smooth razor, definitely a keeper.

Thanks for the comments guys ;)

While I've been using and really like the nickel short comb razor I just can't get use to the gold color of the other razor so today I decided to put it up on ebay tonight.. sigh, I'll be looking for a nickel/chrome long comb now.

luminose - I had my first OC shave tonight and it was with a New LC - had a really good shave. I'm still a relative newb having only started in October and did have a few small weepers with my used feather but still very happy with the result. you won't regret getting yourself a New LC (I've now got two!)
