I am sure you will be able to pick up some shaving items that are typical for Greece/Europe when you are over there. Some shaving soaps / creams probably, Greek aftershaves. Keep us updated on what you discovered over there! And further... enjoy Greece. It has all the ingredients for a fantastic stay.
There's Kolynos shaving cream but the reviews aren't great so I would look for some Kaloderma shaving cream, which is good stuff. There's also Olympic Zeus shaving soap but apparently it's not recommended.
I don't know of any Greek shaving products but you may find other European stuff to be somewhat less expensive than at home. Everyone in Europe (and indeed most of the world) will be thankful for anything that you add to the Greek economy at the moment.
I have lived in Greece for 3.5 years where I did my B.Sc. great place to be and was lucky enough to travel most of the islands as a tour guide, I miss that place more than anything
Many things you can do in Greece, in Athens, on an island or in mainland Greece. If you need any help just ask since I have been living in Athens since I was born
As far as shaving creams are concerned you normally get:
- Kolynos, Nivea, Gillette sensitive, prosar and a german or austrian one, don't remember the name probably organic (just bought it once). The best of these for me was the Gillette sensitive, but I now use Proraso
- Astor and Wilkison classic is usually what you will find as far as blades are concerned. If you are lucky you might even find some Gillette platinums. Funny thing that even though BICs are manufactured in Greece usually only Astor is available here (both from BIC).
Another interesting thing is that the shaving R&D department of BIC globally is situated in Greece.
Forgot to add that you can also get Gillette blades in a couple of places (supermarket and one big cosmetics products department store chain). Usually from the UK, the ones with the hardened edge are getting harder to come by and still you can find platinums in the paper/cardboard packing.
Apivita, especially the men serie, you won"t regret it.Korres followed but Apivita is must try.
Also you can find some niche scents at Attica mall,is the biggest shopping mall in Athens centre.
If you visit Athens go to Kolonaki square for shopping, there is the central Hondos beauty shop,is the best in Greece.
Hope that helps
Just to add on this, in case someone else happens to go to Greece in the future and tracks this thread for reference.
These are the Gillette Platinums sold in various outlets of a cosmetics multi-store called "Hondos Center" (as referenced earlier):
They come at around Eur 2.00 - 2.50 (say $2.50 - 3.00) for that single pack of 5 blades, if I remember correctly. Not sure if they are available in all stores of course or even if they are at all available now. I bought these back in June 2010.
They shave very well, in my subjective opinion, really smooth. I hear they cost less than $0.50 in Libya and $6.00 (for that same 5-blade pack) in Finland. I haven't shaved with them since early summer so cannot remember of they have these 'sticky' glue prints - if so, then they're from the St. P factory that makes all kinds of blades (other Gillette Plats, Astras, Sputniks, etc.)
The Astor & Wilkinson Classic blades, as mentioned earlier by georgekyr are also available, possibly in most Hondos Center outlets.
The German/Austrian 'organic' shaving cream that georgekyr probably refers to is Florena. A couple of members here have this in their permanent rotation, if you notice the SOTD thread regularly. The info on the rest of shaving creams (Kolynos, Prosar, Nivea, Gillette Sensitive is correct) and in addition Proraso green 75ml tub, Kent tube and tub are available. In the old days Hondos used to stock Tabac shaving cream as well.
There is also one shaving soap available, it is made by Muehle, and is in a black plastic travel container. I have bought one but have yet to try it. Shown here with a metal shaving bowl, German made, also purchased from Hondos Center for around $10:
There is one chain of 'natural' cosmetics stores, called "Fresh Line". They have a mens line that is distinguished by a myrrh scent. This line is called "Olympius Zeus" and includes a shaving soap in a clay pot with lid. The scent is nice but quite one-dimensional. The shaving soap is not a good performer, hard to lather.
The Apivita and Korres products are fairly good but again on the value-for-money and if you compare with 'natural' products like Speick they are not that great. Korres has a very nice face soap (milk) but his moisturizers lack efficacy and durability in moisturizing. There is a Korres shop in Athens International Airport 'Eleftherios Venizelos' so if you are for some last-minute shopping you'll find stuff there.
