Gluing stones together to get the right combo.

I've been looking for a nice sized travel hone for when I go away and it would appear that the vast majority of barbers hones are around 8000 grit. Now, I'm soft and like a smooth razor so I like to finish mine with a 12000 grit so the ideal combo for me would be 8000/12000 which I've never seen so I'm thinking I might buy one of each, cut them in half to make them a better size for travelling and glue them together. That way I'd have an 8000 for touching up the edge and a 12000 for finishing.

Does this sound crazy?

How long are your trips?

Being that i seem to consider my travel set up (but rarely travel) i'd recommend bringing 2 or 3 more razors and the 12k. I feel like i touch up a single razor a lot by going back to the stones once every 7 shaves or so.

why bring 8k?

all you really need is the 12k (or similar) to touch up as needed. You could also bring a rolled up pasted strop?

Good idea, bring two and you are good for quite a while. Unless, of course, you drop or chip one :001_smile

+1. Unless your trips are longer than 2 weeks in duration or you are susceptible to dinging your blades, a strop and 2 blades should be enough for most trips. If the trips are longer than a month, then the 12k. I travel a lot and I'm able to determine what the condition of the blade is when I come home and usually refresh in a hone at home before heading out. I'm going to be trying a feather AC for the next few trips.

30mm x 150mm coticule. Toss in a small slurry stone and you can do bevel through finish.

And no, you're not crazy.

You could just bring a dozen straights. Then you won't have to do any touch ups until you get home.

I guess it depends on if you are worried about carrying around a lot of weight or a lot of expensive razors.

This might be the best idea. That way you can buy new straights on your trip and put them into action right away.

For touch up honing? Hell, I'd just bring my 40x40 coticule/BBW nat combo. I can't imagine anything ever damaging it (very tight and compact) and it works fine for touchups. I don't use the BBW, but nat combo makes it less likely to split apart and then possibly damage the coti.
