I was planning on getting some this weekend. You only made me want it more.

What have you been drinking?

Yes, they are very nice. Don't reserve them just for Scotch. They work well for other spirits where you wish to keep the nose concentrated and a lot of breathing room is not required. Bourbon, other fine whiskies, aged rum, etc. I plan on ordering a set when my nightmare home addition is complete and I have space for a bar of some description.

I like Glencairns for underproofers, but not as much for spirits above 100 proof. The aroma can get pretty concentrated and overpower the nose due to the inward sweep of the glass. With low proof whiskies, especially 80 and 86 proof, the concentration can really help one to pick out nuances.

Also, the very thick base can pull the temperature of the liquid to that of the glass; this is an advantage if you bring the glass to your preferred tasting temp first and darned annoying if you have a cold glass and want a room temp neat drink.

Does anyone know why there are two distinct thicknesses of glass? I have about a dozen from several different sources and there really do seem to be two styles. Could it be ; crystal/glass; old style/new style (red style/blue style )

The B&B is probably the most recently made that I have, and it is the thinner style.

Are you sure that you are speaking about genuine Glencairn glasses? I have 4 Glencairn glasses and one of unknown manufacture. The unknown one is of different dimensions and weight. Check if they all say "The Glencairn Glass" on the bottom.

I took a closer look and there are definitely at least two styles that have "The Glencairn Glass" etched into the base. I'll call the ones I have style 1 and style 2.

Style 1 (on left)
  • Small, serif type (similar to Times New Roman)
  • Reads from bottom of glass
  • Slight punt at bottom of interior (last drops pool to edges)
  • Thicker glass
Examples:
Benriach, Springbank, Duncan & Taylor (no dates know)

Style 2 (on right)
  • Large, sans-serif type with gaps in the letters (sort of like Gill Sans)
  • Reads through glass from top
  • Slight divot at bottom of interior (last drops pool to middle)
  • Thin glass
Examples:
B&B 2009, Lismore 2009 XMas, Old Forester 75th (2008?)

On closer inspection I would think that the thinner glassware is a newer style. I prefer "style 2" so - keep up the good work, Glencairn.

Those glasses are fantastic. I don't drink any Whisky with any other glass now... I should take a few snaps...
