What's new

Gillette Super Thin blades

Am interested to try these blades but I can see there are the following:

GST (Vietnam)
GST (Thailand)
GST (China)

Which iteration of these is the smoothest and sharpest out of the above

Thanks

There are two versions of this blade. One sold in Vietnam, one sold in Thailand. Both are made in China. When you mention "GST: China", I assume you are referring to the Razor Blades Club site? The one they have listed as China is for Vietnam. The difference in appearance is due to promotional packaging (chance to win gold).

I prefer the Vietnamese Platinum.

Vietnamese - Gillette Super Thin Platinum:

(this version of the packaging notes the blades are made using Japanese steel)

Thai - Gillette Super Thin:

Discontinued - Gillette Super Thin (Non-Platinum), Vietnam:

Don't know if there was ever a Pliatnum version for Thailand

The model for Thailand has never had Platinum on the package. I still have a few packs form 2009 I think.
The model for Vietnam always had the "Platinum". The version for Thailand is slightly sharper compared to the one for Vietnam.

Yes, never come across a Thai Platinum, though they may have existed some time ago.

As for Vietnamese - you can see the picture I posted above - model for Vietnam without the "Platinum". Vietnamese writing, Vietnamese distribution address, made in China

These have the artwork for Thailand though, interesting. Since I see on the back the 48°C warning I think they are new. The old ones didn't have it.

Yes, I noticed that too (you had mentioned the 48°C in another post on some new Gillettes). Yes, same artwork as the current Thais.

But I am still inclined to believe they are old/discontinued blades

The only place I saw them online (both white Gillette logo) was a) one seller on Lazada Thailand selling 100packs b) A listing for one available 5-pack on Todocolleccion for 6€, listed under Antiques (seller, located in Madrid, sent a brief reply that they didn't have any more info, just that it's "rare for collection")

There are two different sets of artwork

Which I would think would either mean they are both older discontinued wrappers or possibly one existed previously and the other has very recently been brought back into production. Almost certainly we can conclude there was a Viet non-Platinum in the past that was discontinued.

But I think the most compelling detail that points towards these being discontinued blades - there's no mention of Procter & Gamble Vietnam on the back of the packet. Current Vietnamese Platinum, Super Blue, London Bridge do. I assume all current Gillettes do. This Viet non-Platinum only has an address for the distributor: Saigon Coop. A bit of googling - its a state owned cooperative that at its establishment in the 90's distributed three lines - Gillette, Oral-B, and Duracel (the later two being owned by Gillette). There's a reference to Oral-B Vietnam Joint Venture Company (Joint Venture of Saigon Coop and Gillette Company ) in the mid 90s. Though the company does still exist today, and sells Gillette

My guess - they are a discontinued blade, from before the P&G takeover in 2004. They are old blades that look current because they look like current Thais, but current Thais look old.

Looks like I'll be returning to Vietnam within a month or two, I'll keep an eye out at the corner shops.

Or they could be fakes. You never know. I have seen Super Thin fakes. A member posted here photos years ago.

P&G acquired Gilette in 2005. To be more precise, it has been announced on the 28th of January 2005.

Made in Brazil, these are OK

I do have few older made in Colombia (those are not good any more)

I understand there are Mexican made (same box) and some fakes, too.

Yes, the very slight possibility exists that they could be fakes...anything is possible. But more than extremeley unlikely. What would be the benefit of now faking a non-Platinum version of Viet Super Thin Platinum? (ie a lesser version in the eye of the consumer, of an existing product). I would be impressed if this single seller on Lazada Thailand pulled it off. And he copied everything correctly, right down to the font, but then chose to list a different company on the packet rather than P&G, which happens to be a company that is a known Viet government entity that was partnered with Gillette in the past Whelp....perhaps...
