Gillette Slim or Fatboy?

I'm new here, so let me first apologize if this is in the wrong spot, I started wet shaving about a month ago, regular razors just give me horrible razor burn.:thumbdown
I've been using a Gillette super speed, but I really want to try an adjustable razor. Thank you - Fred

First, welcome Fred to B&B. Your razor burn can be attributed to several factors such as wrong blade choice, too much pressure, lack of proper lather etc. So before going to spend good money on a "fixable" problem could you tell us a little more of your set up & prep? Many of us have one to sell you but if it ain't broke(the razor) don't replace it.

I think he means carts gave him issues, he switched to the ss liked it and would like an adjustable to experiment with.

Thanks for the welcome. Kcb5150 is correct, I switched from cartridge and disposables due to the razor burn. I switched to wet shaving and now the problem is gone!
The reason I want an adjustable is to experiment. Rxomymind, "Good money" scared me a little, how much could I be looking at? I'm not looking at anything mint in the box or anything like that, just something decent. Thanks again.

I have Fatboy, Slim and Black Beauty adjustables. The Fatboy is by far more comfortable for me. It definitely has a different head shape from the other two, which are nearly identical to each other. I use the Fatboy on setting 5 for WTG, then on setting 3 for XTG, then on 1 to buff out anything I missed. No way I'm buffing with the other two, even on setting 1, they are just too aggressive for my tastes.

I apologise I misread your post. I thought you were getting razor burn from the SS. In that case keep watching the BST thread and an occasional adjustable will come up now & then. A good starting point would be about $18 for a decent one. No rust, pitting, plate loss etc. Maybe it doesn't shine like a show car chrome bumper but hey, that ok.

I'd say $30ish should get you a nice black beauty. Maybe $22-25for user grade. A bit more for a slim. Maybe closer to $40 for a less than visually perfect fatboy, $50-60 for a good'un. $30 should get you a nice slim if you are quick.

It's not that bad on 9, but it will bite you if you get careless. I find the fb head a little chunky for its own good sometimes. I think the slim is a bit nicer to actually use on a daily basis as it is flatter.

Thanks guys, that doesn't sound so bad. I have my eyes set on either a slim or a fatboy, I like the full metal, I don't know what the handle on the black beauty is made of but I don't really dig it. :/ I'm gonna call it a night for today, I appreciate your help! This forum is a lot better than others I've been in. Lots of great helpful people.
Good night everyone.

you will end up getting both.....it's just a question of which comes first

MSstrahan, How does 9 feel on the fatboy? I really like the idea of adjustables. It's like having 9 razors in one!
Like broken glass, but then I am a sensitive guy. On a 7, it feels like my 1941 Ranger Tech. On a 5, it is like my 56 Super Speed. On a 1, it barely cuts hair. This is with Polsilver blades.

I was surprised to find this true of me! Had a Slim (and was and am supremely impressed with it), didn't plan on getting a Fatboy. But one came up on BST for around $10 less than I expected....
At some point I might pare down, once I figure out what I *really* prefer. Or if I ever make real progress toward transition to straights. But for now, these two and a few (VERY inexpensive) SuperSpeeds and a tech, a NEW/LC, and an OLD/Khaki, are my Vintage razors, and I can't figure out if any of them are releasable. The "best" SuperSpeed I ever used I bought for a younger friend, and so no longer have. I gave it to its intended recipient. I don't know if I was lucky that day or if it was somehow "better" for me, but most perfect shave ever was with that. I think I paid $12.00 for it....

Probably an unpopular reply, but just get a decent fixed double-edge razor and learn to shave with it. There aren't any magic answers in an adjustable.:001_smile

i am close agreeing with you on that, however i have got a slim and on 9 its close to an gillette open comb ball end. ymmv of coarse

anyway welcome to b&B

Possibly so. I'm just suggesting that at this stage of the game, that knowledge does nothing to help him become a better shaver.

It's the opposite for me...had a fatboy first, swore that I will never get another razor ....years later and I have a slim, super adjustables long and short plus many others ..resistance is futile lol

Welcome to B&B

If you have not already done so, stop into the Hall of Fame and tell everyone a little about yourself

http://badgerandblade.com/vb/forumdisplay.php/30-Hall-of-Fame

If you stick around you will end up like most of us with LOTS of razors to choose from

Here is a pic of the long handle super adjustable, slim, and fat boy razors as a comparison for you

A Super Adjustable (Short Handle) that I had my eye on last night went for $81! Ouch.

I have a Fat Boy and a Slim, but have only shaved with the Slim as the Fat Boy is currently with Razor Emoprium for replating. (Technically it's re-replating, as it had previously been replated, but there was a mark on the head that just had to go.)

The Fat Boy and Slim head profiles are different. I can comfortably shave under my nose with the Slim and am wondering whether the Fat Boy's bigger head profile (it's not just the handle that's fatter) will give me the under-nostril access that I desire.

Only time - and a good few shaves - will tell.
