Gillette Slim Adjustable 1962 - what plating and how to clean?

Hi guys,

I am not sure what plating is on my excellent new/old Razor, what a shave!

.. And I would like to know the simplest way to bring back some of it's lustre, not looking to replate or anything - yet!

Here is a good guide to cleaning up your razor.

I bought some Peek polish to bring out the shine once mine were clean.

Good luck with getting it in decent shape - it's a fantastic razor. And don't forget some before and after pictures if you can!

Lots of good posts about cleaning and polishing vintage razors and the Gillette Slim razors in particular (many people clean with dish soap or Cleaning Bubbles, lightly polish with toothpaste or more aggressively polish with Maas or similar metal polish that is marked safe for nickel), but to answer your first question, it is plated in nickel.

I used some Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish on mine. A friend found it buried in a hoard of a home he was moving into and gave it to me. It needed a real deep clean and polish, and Mother's came through for me.
