Anyone here that has been a loyal Redtip user who has switched to Merkur Slant, who is now a loyal Slant user? If so can you tell me a little about your feelings on the Slant and your choice to switch?
Tough choice, but I think I would stay with the red tip if it looks nice. They just feel more substantial in your hand, and I know from experience that they survive a drop better than a pot metal head Merkur. As for how they shave, the slant wins by a hair.
I have both and am still in the testing phase with both, as they are both new acquisitions for me. If pressed, I would give "The Heavy" the edge due to its weight and feel.
I just ordered a slant, the Merkur. After not being able to get a close shave under my chin I decided to give a slant a try. When it arrived I loaded it up with a feather blade.
I have done several shaves with this combination and it is the closest shave I have achieved. I now only do 2 passes with the grain and I get a BBS shave on everything but under my chin which is my problem area. But it is way better (closer) with the slant.
And I couldn't get a close shave with the slant at all. The gentleman I bought it from couldn't, either. The person whom I traded it to was very happy with it. Mileage varies a whole lot. I like the R89 and I also like the flare tip SuperSpeeds. No red tip. Yet.
I have a bakelite slant and the Gillette Red tip. I'd say the slant is a smoother shave but the weight of the Red Tip is very nice, as others have noted.
The reason I use the Red Tip more is because I usually have a beard and I find lining it up with the slant is a little more troublesome.
I love them both, but they are significantly distinct that I would not even think of comparing them. If you are dissatisfied with the Red Tip and want to know if the slant can be an improvement, it certainly may. But the Red Tip is a great razor also and with the right blade, it should not disappoint.
