Gillette Red Tip 1958

Just got this baby off of the Bay for $20 (including shipping). Did the sanitizing today and will shave with it tomorrow. This was my first vintage purchase...how did I do in price, Good - Bad - Ugly?

Well you have what's called a "heavy" model that's known by the + + on either side of the neck handle. Not knowing the rest of the condition I'd say not bad. The shave will be slightly more agressive than the regular Red tip model. Enjoy & congrats!

I was watching that one, please let me know how great it shaves so I can torture myself for years to come! fwiw I think you got a great deal!

I'm glad to hear that and thanks for the replies! I'm shaving with it tomorrow and i'll let you guys know how that goes.

Nice! Actually it was reading your post that sent me over to ebay and found a 1955 Red Tip about to close and bought it.

I think I have acquired a nice case of RAD :biggrin1:

Congrats!

I bought a 1955 Red Tip for my birth year razor on a whim. It's a 7 out of 10 condition-wise. Yours is nicer. Turns out I really like how this feels in my hand and on my face, so I'm going to go shopping for a more pristine copy. That's a fine razor you own.

the red tip is my daily shaver. i had no idea the + - + on each side of the handle was meant for extra aggressive or extra heavy. i have two red tips and will have to check them for the marks. good score and hope you enjoy yours

The ++ signs indicated a slightly more aggressive head design. It is detailed in THIS post. Scroll down a little further for more explanation of the + signs.

Great razor!

Well you can't expect a cased NOS one for $20 :001_smile

They are a fantastic daily shaver. Easily could be a one and only razor for you.

You got a good deal on a great razor.

My only razors now are two Red-tips.

BTW, as for being aggressive don't worry about it.

Red-tips are easy to use and very forgiving.

Enjoy!

As i posted in another thread, these are nice well built shavers. $20 is a great price as turtle said, if you don't contract RAD (which you will) you might not have to buy another razor ever again :)

Well...I'm sold! I used it this morning on a couple days growth (and I have manly facial hair - no sissy whiskers). I used a Derby blade, did only two passes, down and across (I was a bit intimidated with the + + as my only other experience is with a Merkur 34C and EJ 89) and then some touch up and dare I say this is one of the best shaves I've given myself having a couple of days growth.

I'll be using it again tomorrow to see what type of work it does on only a day's growth...I'm exited!
