Gillette New: May Not Be Beautiful But What a Shave

The past two days I have used this razor with a Lord SS blade.

$New Jan 2.jpg$New Jan.jpg

The razor is a bronze color and has various places where cosmetically it may not be great (e.g., black streaks on the head). However, I am constantly surprised by the quality of the shaves I get from this razor. Yesterday I used MWF for the first shave with the Lord blade. A BBS shave in 4 passes without the need for any touchups. Today I used Uberlather consisting of MWF, Proraso, and glycerin. Another 4 pass shave with no touchups and another BBS shave. '"

Unlike my R.41, I get BBS shaves without ANY irritation or other issues. The shaves are so close I do not have to worry about 5 O'Clock shadow as I have to with other razors. I may to rethink my choice as my Mergresses as my number 1 razors.

Looks like mine LOL. Short comb goodness IMHO. Like you it was a revolution in my shave routine. Enjoy.

Jim, it seems as though you may have a new favorite razor developing.......i bet you 5 dollars your next shave will convert you all the way

She may be missing her gold wash and the nickle under plating but that brass and copper looks mighty darn spiffy with a good polishing.

Goes to show you that this hobby need not be expensive, blingy and rare. I get great shaves with my not so purty $1 Schick adjustable that I found at a weekend fair. Thanks for the post.

That's a razor that's been places and seen things. Give it a quick polish, but otherwise I'd leave it just the way it is. Enjoy!

I bought a NEW on B/S/T that looks pretty much like that one. I've only tried it a few times -- so far I get a lot of irritation. More than with more famously aggressive razors.
I don't know if it's a technique thing or a "not for me" thing. Time will tell.

I absolutely love my short and long comb NEWs. Some of the smoothest shaves I've had and without breaking the bank! All good reasons for the NEW to be the January 2013 Razor of the Month!

To my mind the NEW was Gillette's peak. Absolutely the best razor they've made, I think. I use mine often.

I think it was their peak in function, but design wise Gillette still had some beauties coming out for a few more years after. It seems like they went for looks rather than function after the peak years design. Gillette did sell his company and I think it was a contributing factor. Even today:001_cool:

i regret having sold one that had been replated. gorgeous and i remember the first shave i had with it. I had to tell someone how great it was.. and no one was around, so i called somebody just to tell them how excited i was over my shave.

Yup! The New's are smooth! In my top three razors along with Cadet and R41. The one thing about the New is I wish it were easier to swap handles. I can use my Weber handles on the others but if I try any other handles on the New it sits crooked.
