Gillette Military Officers Set

I found this set in the wild today, but it came with a ball end in it. Every one I've ever seen has contained a Bulldog, so I figured the ball end was mismatched from another set. But then I looked at the razor and it was marked J9939, indicating that it too was likely sold to the military in 1919.

Has anyone seen any evidence that the "Officer's Set" ever included the more common ball end seen in the smaller khaki sets?

I still think the razor is mismatched, but the "J" serial number has me wondering a bit.

As a post script, oddly enough it also came with the brush from this set, but the tube is not marked Gillette on the side as shown in this photograph.

And I know, pictures or it didn't happen. I'll try to get to those later tonight.

Ok, here we are as promised. The set is in great shape, and includes the mirror, which is missing from my other Military Set, so I was pretty happy about that and that was the main reason I bought the set. $IMG_1450.jpgAs you can see the serial number begins with J and dates to 1919. $IMG_1451.jpgThe underside says property of US Army. Hard to see because of some of the grime, but will show through after a cleaning. $IMG_1452.jpgThe brush tube is the most interesting part. As I said in the first post it looks like the brush from the 1918 Combination Set, but there are no Gillette markings, or markings of any kind for that matter.$IMG_1453.jpg So what have I got here?

Ya know you got think you have something assembled by a man specific to what he liked using. Nice set and find at any rate. Wish I did that well in the wild.......

Awesome set. Was it expensive?

No not at all. I talked the guy waaaay down because I told him that the set was mismatched.

I'm very happy with the condition of the box and the mirror. Those were really the only 2 things I wanted out of the set.
