Gillette handle size

Since I have both handles I thought I should post the difference has Gillette made a small and larger handle. Some Gillette NEW have a smaller gap so the larger handle wouldn't fit. I learnt it after a chat with cooncatbob. Thanks for the information!

In the first picture, you can see a larger handle so it doesn't go all the way to the head.
In the second picture, Gillette NEW with the small gap handle, you can see it fits.
The third and fourth picture, I tried to capture the tip of the handle. It's not much but there's a small difference!

Nice! I have noticed that some handles don't fit between the two bars, but just thought that the thin ball handle was the only correct handle. I never noticed the difference of the top of the "common bar" handles.

The large tip is just under .400 and the small tip is just under .350.
While the difference isn't much a large tipped handle won't fit a small gaped head.
That why I now open all the gaps in the head I have replated.

What is involved in replating a razor? Is it costly

Was this a quality control issue over a bad design? Seems odd the handle wasn't designed to fit snugly against the head.

Great pics and post!

The vibe I got is that there are 2 variants as manufactured... one that has a fat handle and head to suit, and one that has a narrower handle and head to suit. That is what Luc was illustrating & Bob confirming...

There was no issue at time of original sale because you got the whole razor, either "fat" or "slim".

There is a potential issue now because there are people cannibalising for handles/heads to get one good razor from two broken ones.

It's not the diameter of the handle, it's just the tips and the gap on the bottom plate
I have common bar handles with large and small tips and hollow ball ended handles with large and small tips too.
As for the heads I've had long and short comb with large and small gaps.

I Just picked up a new and shaved with it for the first time today. Very nice razor. It was a bit on the light side (it looked heftier). I will have to checked out the tip when I change the blade.
