What's new

Gillette Guards on the Bay...

Interesting. I just checked Ebay two days ago for these. Maybe I will try them... I think that Gillette cartridges aren't as bad as most of people here think.

Wow... Never seen those before.... Im guessing these aren't manufactured anymore?

exact opposite actually... these are very new... it's P&G's attempt at getting a foothold on the Indian market (in India it seems DEs are more commonly used than carts and disposables)

If I was on the board of Schick, I would buy a couple of million sets of these and promote them heavily on the US and european markets!

...I was leery after my initial great experience and subsequent disappointment with the Krazer.

But, the Guard presents a unique initial experience of its own and it is different from the Krazer in every respect. This morning I lathered up with Real Shaving Cream in my Jagger brush. Worked a normal three pass (W, A, XTG) with touch up.

This razor starts very mild. Unlike the Krazer there is no pull whatsoever and unlike a DE hardly any cutting sound. I was seriously wondering if it was cutting any whiskers at all.

I think this mild design feature is Gillette marketing targeted at Indian shavers who are used to DE's.

The first WTG pass did reduce about a third of my beard. And, like a second-shave feather in my Slim on 8, it took everything down close on the third (ATG) pass.

After a little touch-up, the shave was an A-. I did not feel compelled to execute the 4th WTG "polishing" pass that I often do.

And of course, with its cartridge-like pivot head, the Guard gets into the nooks and crannies (jaw-line, under chin) that often elude my DE's.

I would rank it above most cartridges, at least for the first shave. Cartridges typically last 6 + shaves for me and this razor is advertised as being one shave per cartridge, so it will be interesting to see how many shaves we can actually squeeze out of this uniquely designed single blade, stripless cartridge.

In closing, I have to that the most unique feature of the guard is the deep comb. I have also recently gotten some great shaving results with older deep comb DE's and am tempted to attribute this aspect of the Guard's design to initial alacrity.

Gillette expects the Guard cartridge to be useful for 5 shaves. It sells for 5 rupees, which Gillette indicates means the cartridge costs 1 rupee per shave to use.

I am inspired to attempt a third shave with my Guard cart. However, the second wasn't as smooth as the first. Also, the razor seems to irritate my face much more than a DE.

EDIT: Surprisingly, the third shave wasn't bad, about on par with the second. Less irritation tonight than the first two shaves with the Guard as well. Note that last night I took a break from the Guard and used the DE, which I usually get good results from. I may attempt a fourth shave tomorrow -- I want to see if the five shave claim is true. If you try this Michigan, just remember that the first shave with this blade is probably the best it will do.

I am expecting my Guards to be here this week. What kind of B and B member would I be if I didn't attempt to put Gillette's claims to the test??:lol:

I look forward to you posting on how they worked for you. If nothing else, you have 11 razor inserts (and three spare handles) ready for a business trip where you don't check luggage. They certainly shave well enough for that purpose. They are also cheaper than many disposable razors and easier to use than many (although adding shipping makes them more expensive than a Bic disposable).
