Gillete Tech vs. Gillette Super Speed?

I have been using Gillette Super Speeds off and on and I get good shaves with them. I just got a couple Techs from the 1940s-1951. I have not used a Tech before and will probably try one in the morning. What is the general oppinion of the Tech? How do the compare to other vintage Gillette DEs?

Ken, for me they are very mild and effective razors. One if not the mildest razor made.

The thin head of the Tech allows for excellent manueverability around the nose, mouth and chin. The shave can also be adjusted from mild to aggressive, by either changing the blade from a mild mannered Israeli Personna to a sharper more aggressive Feather, or, you can change the mildness or aggressiveness by just simply adding or taking away some pressure.

Once you know what your doing that is and ymmv and all that, thing...

If you enjoy a Super Speed you will have no issues with a Tech.

You could call the Tech elegant because of it's simplicity and the thin head does let you manoeuvre rather well.

I enjoy the shaves from both (mild and effective), I agree that the tech has the added benefit of more maneuverability and the ability to change up the handles.

For me there is no comparison. I'll take a Tech over a Super Speed any day, and a Merkur HD over both of them. I do love the looks of a Super Speed, and the ease of use, but they just don't work very well for me.

I prefer the Tech to the Superspeed. I much prefer the 3 piece head to the bulbous head of a TTO. To me both are mild shavers. I use a shim or two in my Tech. It makes the razor shave more aggressively and works well with a very sharp blade. Good luck.

I have a collection of about 4 of each and all are fine razors. Since shaving off a mustache I had for about 35 years, I find I really appreciate the low profile Tech head over the Super Speeds and adjustables. I have a fat-handle and ball-end that I especially like and they make great travel razors. I also have a couple Travel Techs but the shorty handle makes them more of a collector rather than anything I actually use. Overall, the Tech and SS are both mild shavers yet can be very versatile by using blades with differing sharpness.

I have a 40's style (1952) SS and a 1959 (ball-end) Tech. I keep the Tech around as a backup (and because it still looks like new), but only use it a few times a year. I wish I liked using the Tech more. I like the Tech head, but I find the SS more comfortable to hold. I have no problem switching from the SS to my Merkur HD, but I find the ball-end Tech handle thinner, lighter and more slippery than the other two.

To my face, the Tech is a little on the mild side, and the smidge of additional aggressiveness that a flare tip SS adds is just right.

A Tech with a heavier handle might be just the ticket for me, though.

I get along just fine with one of my Techs (haven't used the other one yet), but overall, I prefer my Super Speeds. The Tech's just a little milder than I prefer.

I did use the ball-end gold-colored Tech (1940s) and like you all said, it was mild. I do like how easily it shaved under the nose. Overall, the shave was good, but not BBS. I think I will put a Silver Blue in it and see how it does tomorrow.
