Gilette Fatboy, Gone but Not Forgotten

I had been using a Gilette Fatboy for many years - the same one. Recently, on a trip to Indiana I left it in my motel room never to see it again. :mad3: I have been looking to replace it on ebay - but can't get over the prices. Some of the prices are higher than what I paid for my Merkur!

Wondering if any of you experts know what would be a fair price for one in good condition. I don't care if it has some scratches or is missing the box it came in.

I'd skim through the B/S/T forum, here, if I were you.
30-40 seems like what to expect.
An uncased fatboy came through there yesterday for 35.

Of course it costs more than a Merkur, it is generally a better razor, more complex in manufacture, and while they aren't making any more Fat Boys the pot metal is pouring at Merkur ..

Seriously, prices are extremely high now, but camping on the BST should get one at a decent price, though the prices there have been inflating lately also .. in the alternative there are some heretics who even find that a Slim gives a better shave!

As I have been away from my den for the past four days, I have been shaving with a slim (it was next in line for the dopp), and I find I'm liking it. The shave seems the same, but takes less effort, with fewer touch-ups.
... so bring on the comfy chair and the soft cushions ...

Hey! The Slim is just as good IMHO, but the Fat Boy is... well... a classic.
I keep a Slim in my dopp kit just in case it gets lost.
They are more readily available (and I have a few spares)
Sorry for the loss.

Keep your eyes on the BST.
Good luck.

There have been some finish as low as 9.99,but it seems the average(for the condition)is about 27.00..Good luck finding a suitable replacement,I am sure the lost razor, was like a part of the family...

I'd pick up a 1932 tech. I love those 3 piece razors, less complicated, easy to clean, cheap and plentiful. You might have to make additional passes and maybe find a good razor/blade combo, but gives a very close shave and rarely bites/nicks. I think the adjustables are too expensive. The only time I pick them up is if I see them for $5 or less at a junk shop or flea market.

My Fat Boys stay at home, my travel razor is a super clean ball end silver Tech...I would be mad about leaving it...but one of my Fat Boys lost...that would bring a tear....

$40-$50 seems like the going price for one in excellent condition. I picked 2 up on ebay in the last 10 days. One for $40 and a second for $49. You can get a nice Slim for $5-$10 less.

There are some deals around keep looking. I thought I would never find one cheap but came across a lot of a blue lady gillette a brit aristocrat jr. and a fatboy for $8.50 + $8.25 shipping. My search was for 3 months or so. All I can say is keep looking one will turn up

Why not give the motel a call? They may have it, and be willing to send it to you.

Ah I called every day! The maid said she didn't see it but I recall leaving it on the bathroom vanity. In fact, I called that evening but alas was too late. This motel even had the gall to charge me $10 for a clip on a hanger they claimed I broke (I did not use the hanger and got the charge revrersed on my credit card.)

Best bet to avoid being robbed is to buy here on the BST but you have to be super fast especially with the fat boy.... They're often gone within minutes!

There is a happy ending to the story. I managed to get three replacements on ebay. A fatboy, an s4, and two "Gillette" safety razors. This way when I travel again I will take along the cheapies.
