Gents, show off those Dopp kits...

Wikipedia said:
A Dopp kit is a small toilet bag, made of leather, vinyl, or cloth, that is used for storing men's grooming tools for travel. Common items kept in a Dopp kit are deodorant, a razor, shaving cream, comb, shampoo, nail clippers, scissors, toothbrush, toothpaste, and cologne. The name derives from early 20th century leather craftsman Charles Doppelt, a German immigrant to the United States, who invented his toiletry case in 1919.

The kits became widely known during the Second World War when they were issued to GIs. Doppelt's company was purchased by Samsonite in the early 1970s.

Dopp kits were once a common gift given to adolescent males as they ascended from boyhood to adulthood.

Although the term was originally a trademark, it appears to have at least mostly become generic, and the US Patent and Trademark Office lists the trademark as abandoned.
In England the item is known as a "sponge bag".

When you must be away from your shave den, what sort of bag do you keep things in? What are your travel necessities?

When I am at work, I always make it a point to carry a change of clothing and my shaving kit (I work as a Paramedic, and you never know what's going to happen in the course of a day)...

My bag is a Longchamp that I received as a gift from my girlfriend's parents.

In it I carry:
-Merkur Classic
-Merkur Blades
-Vulfix 1000A
-Castle Forbes Lavender shaving cream (travel size)
-L'Occitane Shampoo/Conditioner (travel size)
-Large/small nail clippers
-Toothbrush (in holder)
-Tooth paste
-Floss
-Pomade
-Stain remover pen
-Col Conk styptic pencil
-Advil
-Old Spice Everclear Deodorant (swagger variety)

Sometimes I add items if I know I will be away for an extended period of time.

Show em off, gentlemen!:thumbup1::thumbup:

I have this one, which I like very much, but it isn't quite big enough for me. I'm interested to see if anyone can point me to a similarly priced one, but a little bigger. For the record, the quality of mine is quite good for the price - very nice leather.

Looks like a great bag, I think I would personally prefer the initials to be stamped into the leather rather than embroidered. Best of luck finding a larger model.

In the 70s I purchased a belting leather Dopp kit in the largest size available at that time; I think that was before it was purchased by Samsonite because I don't recall it referring to anything but Dopp. How could/can I tell? I think I paid about $50. for it but it was $5. more than the next highest priced model. I never used it much but it has served me well and is in almost new condition.

We didn't have much money when I lived on a farm in KS especially during the second dust bowl of 1953-59 when more farmers went broke than in the 30s and this was the first quality piece of leather I owned and for that reason I made it a Dopp kit. I was afraid of damaging it and seldom used it but I'm glad I purchased and have it but I am thinking of selling it because it seems a shame for it to be sitting in a closet not being used but I have no idea what it is worth today.

Thanks for reminding me that I have a Dopp kit; good memories connected to it.

It's technically not a Dopp kit, but meh. I've had this for about 6 years, have used and abused it, and I've never even seen a loose stitch. Seriously. Best $30 I ever spent.

(Mainly because I haven't spent $30 on a razor yet :wink2:)

mdunn...what kind of shave stick to you have in the Colgate and metal cylinder (left)? I have a full size and a half size Colgate shave stick container and a similar container to the one on the far left.

I upgraded to a nice Columbia bag last year and couldn't be happier. It's one of those flatter, wider kits (can't find a picture) with the large center section who's flap lifts up and can hang from a hook (mesh pocket on the flap, then mesh webbing in the main part divides it into 3 sections), with 2 pockets on either side.

It's green canvas with brown leather trim. I expect it to last the rest of my life, and for it to look good for the duration.

I use a black Tumi dop kit that a girlfriend got my about 5 years ago. I travel every week for work and absolutely love that thing. In it I keep my razor, a small mirror, some blades and the other basics like toothbrush, nail clippers, comb, floss, tweezers.

I carry a tube of proraso in my 1 quart resealable plastic bag (thank you TSA).

Just a nice simple, and I think stylish, black leather job. The brand on is Triplite. Holds everything I need for up to a few weeks away.
